Hello, as I posted on friday night, my poor boy has a filled leg. He's not lame and it's not hot but it is filled. Thing is, it happened after the ground froze and now it's vey uneven so I think he has slipped or hit himself with his other leg. ANYWAY, it seems better in the evenings that the morning as although he does live out, they don't move around much at night (stays in field shelter and on hard standing) so, I was going to cold hose him but i think that the water will actually freeze on his leg so i put like ice on it and have now been putting arnica/witch hazel stuff on it- any other suggestions? should i keep going with the like ice? it's just hard to assess the leg when it's covered in sticky clay!

I definitely wouldnt be using Like Ice and I don;t think cold treatment would be very beneficial in this case- you want to stimulate the circulation to that area to clear away the fluid, not restrict it as you would with an acute injury.
So I'd work him gently, think about turning him out in bandages over night particularly whilst it isnt wet and massage it gently if you have time.

actually, when we rub it with the arnica stuff i am sure it does go down. I'll go and massage him for a bit later when i give him is night hay. thank you for your comments...

I bought that Equi-ice(think its called that as seen on dragons den

You need bandage and liquid stuff.Bandages(soaked with liquid) go on left for couple of hours.Really helped my youngster when he tweaked his leg.

I have to say I wouldn't be happy putting bandages on a horse that is out all the time incase it rains or snows and they freeze on restricting the normal blood flow.

Over a nice thick gamgee pad and with sufficient length of bandage it's fine- you can vetwrap over the top too for extra protection.

Do I just need to relax and see what happens over the next week? If he goes lame or it gets worse i will call the vet, I just don't a) want to waste money and b) (and this has happened before with another horse) have the vet out who will do exactly what I have done and then scratch his head and say 'yeah, i don't know either'....and the I still get charged and i am none the wiser but a lot poorer!
I don't want to sound tight- if he was in pain, I'd get the vet out in a heartbeat...

OOps my mistake Sorry didn't read that bit properly

:crazy. My boy was on box rest.

No if out def not put bandages on.
Magnetic therapy boots? Not on all time tho.
Friend uses Arnica clay with positive results.....

If he was in, I would bandages, but shutting him in will probably cause himm a lot more stress and then he will probably do a lot more damage!

I would use a Bonner Bandage for 10 minutes. Was at a yard that had the water cut off once and had to resort to that. Saves standing around holding hose as you can potter around doing jobs while horsey has it on.
