Alternative to Copra?

Hi All,

My 17hh IDX Mare has done well on Copra this summer, alongside equimins balancer. She is currently on 1 scoop (dry weight, I soak it) twice daily. She is now in over night with ad lib hay and out during the day on fair grazing.

My job is due to change and I am taking a look at costs across my life (joy!) and realised feeding Copra at this rate is getting a bit  However, if she needs it, she needs it, just want to explore alternatives.

What would be peoples recommendations for a more cost effective alternative? She isn't an amazingly good doer, but equally doesn't get hotted up easily either. Workload is reduced to hacking at weekends now its winter, so light work. I try to steer clear of sugarbeet or speedibeet as it tends to upset her tummy.

Thank you in advance!

Thank you both. I have used Linseed with her before and didn't find it as good at getting/keeping on condition as it had been for previous horses.

Perhaps I will try halving the copra and replacing with oats or grass nuts then and see how we go....

thanks!

I'd try reducing the amount, and see how you go. That's quite a lot of copra - I've got three skinnies here - two arrived very thin, and one has been ill. They have all picked up really well on a far smaller quantity - I soak one scoop of copra and two scoops of grassnuts in 5 scoops of water, which does am and pm feeds for all three. I've just had to take one off the copra as she has got a bit porky!

Thanks Auslander, I did wonder if I was overdoing it a bit and therefore everything going straight through! Will drop it back, buy some grass nuts/oats as a standby and see how we go. Especially as her workload has reduced.

I am used to keeping porky ponies, much easier!

Thanks

Hi Auslander, may I ask you which grass nuts you recommend please? I have never used them before and my local feed shop only had baileys alfalfa nuts when I asked for grass nuts.

Thank you

I'm using the new Dengie ones at the moment, but have used Graze-On previously.
