Frontline is apparently non effective any more and just wondering about alternatives. Dog has Advocate for fleas, mites etc and wonder if anyone has used it for their horses. Obviously like Frontline its not officially prescribed for use on horses.
in the shampoo when washing legs (diluted). However- it doesn't seem to kill mite eggs so needs a few applications a week or so apart to prevent new hatched re populating. The case we had was a horse that did not have very heavy feathering so easier to use a shampoo like this and be sure it had got every hair. Obv that's harder in your case gothdolly!
I used effipro spot on with great results. It is fipronil the same as frontline but it worked for mine. I used the one for large dogs, one on each leg and did it again in about three weeks if I remember right.
I use the same as Lelly, buy it on eBay much cheaper, I also use Switch, as I had some from an itchy shetland that never got used, and thought it was worth a try, it did work so have been alternating the frontline with switch and I use pig oil and sulphur which helps, I don't always believe the itching was purely mites with my lad and I notice a big difference if any of his feed contains any high protein levels or too much haylage, so I am really careful with feeds etc.
I used Effipro (fipronil) but the spray, two weeks apart. Mine has heavy feathers and had a chronic infestation when she arrived - they've gone (the mites, not the feathers!)
I also use pig oil and sulphur for maintenance. No idea if it helps against mites but apparently it does keep them at bay.
I bought mine via Amazon. It is about half the price of Frontline (but the same ingredients) - which is a plus when you have four legs to treat, each smothered in enough fur to cover several large dogs!
I'm trying need oil at the moment. I regularly pig oil > sulphur but get the occasional break out. Used yo use sectoral but it stopped working after a while. Ditto frontline/effort - doesn't matter which brand it's the same chemical so if one doesn't work none of them will. Now using been oil after spotting he was very itchy a couple of weeks ago and it seems to be working.
