My mare is a bit of a nightmare when she is in season, not so much with her moodiness but he general performance SJ and xc, as in she point blank refuses to perform!

I've previously had her on regumate which was covered by my insurance this stopped a few months ago and can't afford to pay for her to go on it.

What are the alternatives, not convinced with herbal remedies on the market.
I've heard about vets giving injections that last 2 to 3 months anybody know anything about that?

Hi, I had a mare that had a marble fitted, and it was no miracle cure but did calm down the spikes of behaviour. It was much cheaper than Regumate on a long term basis. It was a simple visit to the vets, and once in, it stayed in......

Your other veterinary option is progesterone implants but they are notoriously unreliable in horses as really developed for cattle.

Anything proven to suppress estrus reliably is going to come from your vet. You could give chaste berry etc a go. They won't act like Regumate - nothing will - but they do seem to help some mares.

You could see if your vet will give your mare receptal costs about £16 a shot but one injection sorts my mare out for the whole eventing season. Not licenced in this country for horses( but your vet can prescribe) but used a lot in the southern hemisphere helps if your vet is helpful rather than wanting to sell you regumate.
Luckily we have lots of cattle here which is how I found out about it.
Just checked data sheet online it is now licensed for neds!!

If you haven't yet tried agnus cactus it is certainly worth a go. Cheap as chips and has been very effective on my mare.

I also recommend agnus cactus - works wonders on my mare :) I also have a friend who was on regumate and swapped to agnus cactus and she's had great results too. I get mine from Pegasus Health

Another vote for agnus cactus. My mare is 22 so not so much for performance but it stops her being twitchy/nippy with grooming and girthy and generally she's less grumpy.

Improvac is the injection you can have. Not licensed for use in equines in this country (it is in Australia and other countries) so you will need to sign a disclaimer (and obviously any related issues won't be covered by insurance etc).

Its not as proven as regumate but seems to work well. The carrier is a bit basic so whilst the shot itself is cheap (about £25) its recommended to have a shot of finadyne/bute/similar (particularly if your mare is reactive). It lasts 4-6months (depends on individual horse). My mare was treated with it at Liphook (having found a course of regumate to be effective) and they have a few racehorses running on it as well as competition horses (so its not that uncommon and I had more confidence in using it).

However for future fertility there are still some questions and the younger the mare the longer it seems to take them to return to normal cycling (so if you were planning to breed within the following 18months they would advise against using it)
