I have double road nails in each shoe as the roads are slippy near me and a single pair of nails just shear off. Yesterday we ended up on the road as going down hill her leg totally went underneath her, on investigation all 4 road nails had sheared off. She is not due for shoeing yet but I cant take her out like this. My farrier has said previously that its because shes so active behind, but it cant trully be that can it?! What are the alternatives? I know you can get little pin things that the farrier drills in or road studs. What are my options, as annoyed now

My farrier puts some weld onto my shoes rather than the nails. Dont know if it would work for you but it certainly helped my old girl who would slip quite a lot.

Sounds like you had tungsten tipped road nails
These don't work that well as they are set in softer metal so often do shear off

You need the driven in road studs or proper stud holes and road studs. I prefer the driven studs as they don't stick out quite so much and unbalance the foot.

Hey R!

I use the pins (think that's differnet to what you've got?) - I've never had a problem with them shearing off on any horse I've used them on. May be worth a go.

I'd be a bit nervous of using proper studs - imagine the mess that would have made during your recent incident

I presume you boot up to help protect from any mishaps?
