We used to use a thumbnail sized piece of rolling tobacco on the stud I worked at where the owner wouldn't pay for wormers! This is what the old farmers used when I was little before wormers were widespread. I can't guarantee its effectiveness though.
I believe there is also something you can do using Glo White or a blue disc for whitening clothes but I don't know what exactly.
Why don`t you get a regular worm count done which will tell you if they have a worm burden or not and then you can just worm when it is required, although i think there is a worm that dosent show on counts ??

thanks for those sugestions. How do you do a worm count?Or is that an obvious question?
Is the nicotine ingested?

You see, this is the bit I don't understand. You might consider administering nicotine on the say-so of somebody you have never met on a forum, but are unhappy about tried and tested drugs readily available on the market.
Just because something grows and is 'natural' doesn't mean is isn't harmful, or just plain ineffective. If you google 'worm count' you should find companies that will calculate from a sample at reasonable price, don't know if they could identify lungworm though (never had donkeys but understand they are more prone to this than horses)
no I am not a complete idiot. I know that nicotine when ingested is a strong poison(they say 3 cigars will kill an elephant). It is called having an open mind.I am always grateful for any reply to my posts .

You never know....thats the sort of snippet that could save a life one day!
If its any help.....
I use Verm X and Multiworm. Both are herbal 'wormers' and I have found them very effective (based on worm counts). I blood test to determine if I need to worm for tapes as a faecal egg count doesnt show this, and I chemically worm for encysted redworms but thats it.
i go with spaniel on this herbal wormer like verm x very good. would not touch nicotine its not exactly good for us. And years ago if you think about it there were not so many horses around they were generally grazed on larger fields mainly with sheep, cattle etc so worms were probably not a major issue. We tend to have horses in smaller paddocks these days with over grazing of land and no cross grazing
Hi
Please worm your donkeys....worms can kill....it may save their lives...most worming drugs are tested at many times the dosage to many horses....which may not be true of folk and homeopathic remedies.
Take care

Rather than scare monger a better suggestion would be to take both a faecal egg count and do a blood test, that would give an idea of the burden of parasites being carried.
Its quite possible that there may be recourse to chemical treatment on this occasion, however there would be no reason to suggest that the two herbal wormers suggested would not be effective in the future. Both are highly respected and not produced by tofu hugging quacks over the kitchen table!
I use all the manure from the stable on my vegetables -for one reason. And don't want to put Ivermectin in my potatoes.
I never go to the doctors unless I am ill myself and the idea of medicating preventatively doesn't appeal to me.So I obviously tend to treat the pets in a similar way.
I do worm if someone says to me that they need it. So it is not that I won't but I do want to limit it .
I have read that a healthy animal can tolerate a certain level of worms and that it won't get out of control.
I use our manure for vegetables and I am not aware of Ivermectin affecting them. Anyway I would think that the amount would be so small that the chances of it affecting crops would be next to zero.
I worm my donkey with half a syringe of what the horses are being wormed with and its done every three months. Ive had no problem with reactions etc and would not stop worming any of my animals, goats, dogs etc just because I disagree with taking an asprin if I felt a headache coming on . Worms do harm and should be taken seriously-they CAN kill!
