I feed all my horses on Topspec Lite (bar the old pony who gets a ‘proper’ feed). They’re all fat and don’t need anything else so just get grass, hay and chaff.

I ran out of balancer about a week ago when my feed man couldn’t deliver, no panic as like I say they won’t waste away!

Now the curious bit…. Since I stopped feeding the TopSpec my very sharp mare has been, well, pretty sane! Did some Googling and found a few threads on here from people who found Topspec made their horses sharp?

Has anyone found this?

And what can I switch to instead? None of them need a feed either weight or temperament wise so I don’t want a complete feed that will make them fatter/sharper. The 2 big ones get 3 scoops of various supplements in each feed and my mare is fussy so I need something low-calorie but suitably tasty to get her to eat her feed/supplements. Annoyingly the Topspec is what was tempting her to eat her chaff.

I’m tempted by Equimins Advance but have heard it’s not very palatable so what can I mix it into to tempt them to eat it without adding calories or making the sharp ones sharper? Or any other options for balancers?

I feed the Equimins advance in the powder form and both my horses like the flavour. I would maybe consider a mash to mask this? Pink mash perhaps?

Is Pink Mash very palatable? I have previously tried her on Fast Fibre and Spillers Speedy Mash and she turned her nose up

I like the Bailys Sweet Meadow mix, it's a complete feed when fed in correct weight, its non heating and low cal. My horse isn't fussy but i don't find her spicy on it where as i have found Topspec can make them fizzy.

Gain Opti Care is fabulous value for money as it comes in 20kg bags. I use it for my straight forward horses who don't have any specific issues and they look super on it.

I stick to Top Spec Senior for the special needs horse and wouldn't deviate from it, I do think their products are expensive but the mare does thrive on it and nothing else is needed apart from hay.

Spillers lite and lean is excellent.
I feed my little competition mare Spillers Stamina cubes and Spillers original balancer. She is lovely and calm and looking very well on this. I have known a lot of people that have found Top Spec make their horses rather sharp.
