Hi everyone,

I am new here although I have read posts from Horse and Hound for years and years!

My mare is very sharp and strong, especially to her fences and had almost 2 months off jumping. I jumped her briefly at the end of April this year and she was super strong.... She ended up splitting the inside of her lip on one side - I was mortified, she has always been this way but this has never been a result of it!

Anyway fast forwards to now, it has healed and split.. Healed and split as it is 'weakened'. Preparation H and Anusol have been fantastic but I am looking to try using Alum Salts, soaked on a snaffle etc.

Has anyone got any experiences with this? Xx

I have the human version of this brought on by really hot and then really cold weather. For about three months my lip has been healing and then splitting again in the corner. Knowing how painful and easy it is to re-open, I'd look into going bit-less for a solid 6 months to let the scar tissue thicken properly and heal. The only thing that seemed to help mine was Zovirax and Manuka honey.

What bit are you currently using? I'd rather use something strong and take a light hold than something more dull and get an issue like what you have now from having to pull so hard.

I wish I could, she is a pleb bit less. ?? She's just too strong, too forward. She can do little bits bit less but nothing serious and she is the sort that really needs a job. So annoying, it's never happened before and now it seems to be ruling my life!!

Could you try a bitless option with a bit for backup? So you're riding off the bitless where possible and the bit is only coming in to action when necessary?

Or if not, I'd be looking at combi options so that not all the pressure is on the mouth.

Yes, hoping to hire a combination bit very soon!
