i just pulled some of my new mares mane and she hates having it done and did hate it with her previous owner.

i checked and the root of her main some of it was bleeding in little dots.

ive seen manes pulled before and i am doing it right but i cant help thinking im being really mean. is there any other options or is it suppost to be like this?

any opinions or thoughts more then welcome

ps she needs to have something done as it looks awful

I actualy didnt no they bled until about a month ago whilst pulling a friends ponies mane!!! I only pull a little from my horses mane as its naturally thin so use scissors to :o ... my friend uses a solo comb and another uses a thing that looks like a mini rake!! There horses dont like there manes being pulled, but they dont mind these contraptions lol hope that helps :p

Mine hated having his mane pulled (he used to rear because of it) so I bought a solo comb and hated it - it made it look like I'd cut his mane with scissors.

So, I bought one of these:

which is great even though it is technically a dog grooming tool!

You use it like you would a mane pulling comb, only the small blades cut the hair gently rather than snap it - so better for my fingers and the horse :), it might be worth giving it a try!

clove oil, massage it into the base of the hair and leave for about 5 min, where gloves it is a natural pain killer (use to be used to cure tooth ache) and pull a little bit of hair out. you want be able to do the whole neck in one go but it sure helps to desensitise and bydefault reduces pain for the horse

My youngster loves it, he falls asleep when i set to his mane!!

I'd try a solo comb, when pulling the mane you back brush it, and pull a small amount at a time out. It doesn't usually cause pain, but like people, some are 'head sore'

Mane pulling does unfortunately pull the hair out, unless, of course, you have a horse with a thin mane anyway. Thats why it thins it too.. I've never had one bleed though - tails yes - I hate doing tails...

For my mare that objects a bit we bribe her with lickits (I only ever use then for bribes/rewards when pulling/clipping/ having a youngster shod for first time..) For the two geldings we have that totally refuse to have any hair pulled (these two would have man flu if human!!) we have to use a solo comb and mane rake. The mane looks good down, but isn't as easy to plait as a pulled mane... "Luckily"?? I had to have one of them sedated for his teeth to be done, so I scalped him while he was asleep - hoping not to have to do much at it for a couple of months!!

Definately feel like trying the razor thing - do you use them like a solo comb/mane comb?

Thinning knife, i did V's full mane yesterday in about 5mins or so it looks completely natural as good as pulling (i am an expert when it comes to mane pulling :) )and he quite enjoys it just stands their and his muzzle goes to the side lol like when you give them a good scratch

i always back comb the mane and then pull a little bit out at a time. im doing it right arnt i ?

i would like to carry on with just pulling as it looks good and her looks are one of the best things about her lol apart from my hugs from her.

i just didnt realise it made her bleed and i wasnt sure if people thought this was mean.

i really like the numbing idea

and thanks for all the tips

I think mane pulling is horrid. Its one of those things which has happened for years so people simply continue to do it without thinking. Would you like your hair pulled out?! But horses are simply told off and forced to endure it. I dont pull my horses mane, I use one of those solo combs and a thinning rake (which cuts hair, doesnt pull).

As far as it being 'painful' - it's like people. Some almost like having their eyebrows plucked, others can't stand it!
Dante's tail bleeds if I pull it, but he doesn't seem to care. He's fine with me doing his mane too, but now I use scissors on his tail :p Awful, I know, but I can't stand the bog brush look either!

I've always used a SoloComb on mine, he hates having it pulled. With a bit of practice you should be able to get it to look like it's been pulled.

My boy is a bit weird, he loves having his mane pulled! i don't tie him up and just stand on a bucket next to him. He twists his muzzle around as if i'm scratching an itchy spot and occasionally moves forwards or backwards to where he wants me to pull the mane out!

Ask yourself if you'd like someone pulling your hair out by the root. And before I get jumped on for anthropomorphizing and being a fluffy bunny I am not but horses feel pain just as you or I would.

Some horses don't seem to mind pulling - my TB was fine with it but if you have a horse that is in obvious discomfort then for heaven sakes don't do it - common sense tells you that surely!

Like other posters have said use a solocomb, thining rake etc. Totally unnecesary to pull the mane these days there are other alternatives that give the same result.
