Its been drizzeling all day, and windy but it is warm, little foal is shivering slightly in the field and has stopped coming in on a night since the monsoon season finished but i have this massive urge to get her in and wrap her up, give her a cup of tea and run a warm bath!! But shes a horse, she can cope in the drizzle cant she?? none of the older members of the herd seem bothered but should i still be giving little foal special treatment or is it time she grew up and i stop being one of the pathetic horse owners that even annoy me!! Iv gone all soppy...

Does anyone else leave the foals out 24/7 or bringing them in on a night??

All of my horses, including foals, live out 24/7 but I haven't yet seen any of the foals here standing shivering; when it rains (which isn't very often) then they normally always wander into their barns/shelters. Foals generally are not so stupid that they will stand shivering outside in cold weather. If any of my foals were to be found shivering and they weren't bright enough to go inside, then I would likely put them into a stable, or pop a little waterproof rug on them.

Ha Ha! - I just knew what the rest of your post was going to say with just reading the title!

Ofcourse your not! Rugs all the way for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get her in and wrap her up and make her comfortable!

You do hear the old school type and people that deal in horses say "Foals shouldn't have rugs on!" But if I had a foal ...IT WOULD!!!

No, get her in! The weather has been so grim this summer I don't think they've had a chance to harden up. I've just ordered a turnout rug for our 3 month old, to be delivered express, given the forecast for the next couple of weeks!

It's been pouring down here all day and foalie's out with her mother and I must admit, they both look pretty miserable BUT if they haven't got the wit and sense to go and shelter under the banks of trees (in full leaf) on three sides of the field . . . . well, then TOUGH! She won't have a headcollar on so she can't be taken down the road to the stables so she'll have to be wet and miserable!!! For goodness' sake, they're horses and it's not cold. It's only going down to a minimum of 15 tonight - I'm sure they'll live . .

Our mares and foals are all out tonight and have been out 24/7 for ages. They have a barn they can go in and if its really heavy rain they normally lead the charge to get out of it. But light rain they are happy to be out eating.
