Tried a lovely 13.3hh NF pony at the weekend and still unsure about him. Main thing is I feel really big on him :( I'm 5ft 1in and used to ride a 13.2 Welsh pony but recently had been riding a 16.2 TB so I felt massive on the new forest!

Apologies for the terrible photo (OH took the pic) and dreadful leg position! He seems nice enough, a little bit nappy but owner says that's because he's had the winter off and only recently coming back into work (hence his bargain price), and his 10 year old daughter struggles to hold him when he naps but he didn't try it on near as much with me (just got on with it when I kicked him on). Given I lost my confidence with the 16.2 TB who I was petrified to even trot, I managed to canter the pony and even pop a small jump! But in the future I would love to do some jumping and XC (only low level and riding clubs stuff) and think he might be a bit small for me, or I may outgrow him in ability, although the owner has jumped 3ft 9 on him!

Thoughts please? :D

you dont look too big but hard to tell with feet ie shorter stirrups?? dark pic

I think I would find it annoying that my heels dont touch ie below and having to keep lifting them. I suppose it depends how sensitive to leg etc the pony is.

But you look fine size wise.

Yes I did think that, and felt I was also top heavy! If the pony was nearer 14.3hh I think I'd feel more comfortable on him.

The stirrup holes were awkward indie999 in that they were really far apart! Did get OH to video me as well, which is clearer but just need to upload it.

Thanks tuffles. He did look lean and he felt quite slim. I also didn't feel overly balanced on him and I think it was because of the saddle.

Overall thought he was nice but didn't jump off wanting to buy him straight away which makes me think he's not the one. Will certainly to look for something 14.2+

If you are not sure walk away , last year we went pony/horse shopping for my son for his 3rd pony club type and we looked at a whole range of types and sizes and prices and when we found Meg we knew she was the one :) and she has not put a hoof wrong since but we did view quite a few interesting sorts and had one fail the vet .
ps she was the cheapest one we viewed and came with all tack and rugs :)

To be honest you do look a little long In the leg on him and if you felt big then it's not meant to be- you want to enjoy riding and not constantly spend every moment wondering 'am I too big?' 'Will he cope?'

Thanks for your views everyone :) This is the 17th pony I've gone to view so I'm probably just keen to find the one! Will certainly keep looking and hope the right one comes along at some point!

He must be very narrow if you're only 5'1! You don't look too big to me at all...

(But then I'm 5'9 and ride a 14,1 - and my legs do come below his sides at dr length but we manage...)

In situations like this I like to think of WFP - if his legs weren't to come below his mount's sides at dr length, he'd have to ride an elephant. And that really would interfere with his success round 4*s...

Rule of thumb is that your feet should be level with the stomach line, so in that respect you do look too big on him. You don't look too heavy on him though.

I would say that if you felt too big on him, then that would be enough to put you off. Also, I would be wary about the bargain price and the nappiness.
