I think my lad has an abscess brewing in his foot so he has been in off the grass on a small enclosure with access to his stable since friday. I called vet on Sat and they took all the details and advised to poltice for 3 days and then call on Tuesday if nothing had appeared abscess wise...this was taking into account that I could not rule out some sort of laminitis, although he is lame quite clearly on one leg only and this was the only one with a feelable digital pulse. The vet felt it was more than likely an abscess and that it would be better to wait until Tuesday before they came out as it did not sound major and he was weight bearing etc.
So here we are on Sunday eve and not a sign of anything yet!!!
I just want to see some nice gunk each time I re-do the poultice!
It is driving me mad in case it is something else...am I being impatient hoping for something to appear after 2 days of wet poultice?

In my experience the abcess needs to be accessed before poulticing will have any effect. If there is no hole visible how can the poultice draw anything out. Vet or farrier required.

Sadly my farrier was due last Weds and did not turn up...I have left 3 messages but fear he is away! We have a lack of farriers in the area so to get another one out would be nigh on impossible.

Get your farrier out as the others have said - probably needs to open the abcess to release the pressure - then you will get lots of lovely pus!!

Call the farrier, get the shoe off, and poultice the foot properly. They usually clear up quite quickly I find if the farrier is involved first, rather than the vet.
