Bit of background, my horse caught a respiratory infection (whole yard did) in April, had vet 1 out, broad spectrum antibiotics (Norodine) a month off work for all. Started riding again for 2 weeks, then coughing started again worse than ever mostly under exercise, plus heaving & huffing even in walk. Meanwhile the other horses all cleared up fine - my boy couldn't shake it. Had vet 2 out after a few weeks of rest as 1st was useless, bloods done given respadril, bute & strong antibiotics for a week, coughing stopped. 3 days later coughing started off again so had another week of bute & respadril only which stopped it. Told leave him a further 2-3 weeks off after the course finishes (providing he's stopped coughing) then I can start hacking him out in walk.

During this period after treatment finished hes coughed twice, once wolfing an apple too fast, and again when in overnight for worming (very dusty stable block probably irritated his throat), but that was 2 weeks ago. So both justified in my mind.

He's been spotted galloping lengths of the field & running about - no coughing, but very bored! lol

Today, is 2 & a half weeks, seeing as he's been fine I decided to take him out. Tacked up, went out & he loved it, walked the whole way, no coughing, puffing, or heaving, I was over the moon. He came back had tea & turned back out, he went straight for the water trough for a drink, as he went to leave it, coughed twice!!!!

What I'm asking really is can horses wolf too much water being thirsty & cough? Or am I being paranoid thinking the riding set him off. Should I ring the vet for advice again or monitor after a few more rides? Is it possible he'll be left with a permanent cough after this infection? I'm gutted but same time think I'm over reacting. But he NEVER EVER used to cough before any of this but then again I'm watching him like a hawk.

Box of celebrations for anyone whose got the end!!! lol

Personally i would just monitor it, if it becomes regular again then maybe consult your vet, you could just be being paranoid- it happens to all of us :) If it becomes more apparent then maybe more action is needed :) fingers crossed for you! xx

I would keep going with bringing him back into work, tonight was probably a coincidence, but you won't know unless you try again. If it doesn't happen again, great, but if it does at least you'll know for sure.

Thankyou both! I'll keep on with the walking a few times a week & keep an eye on him, increase it slowly but if it becomes consistent I'll ring my vet back. Hope it doesnt come to that as she said next move is tracheal wash!
