Took daughters and the ponies to practice jumping - we had hired the arena at a local equestrian centre.
Takes about 20 mins in the trailer - both loaded fine. Travelled them both in fleece's cos they both tend to rub in the trailer!
When we got there both were warm, but not sweaty. Tacked up and went into outdoor arena to warm up. Youngest daughters pony sweated up very quickly when he doesn't hardly sweat at all - was panting quite a bit and then started shaking (as if he had a fly on him - but definately didn't) He has done this shaking before, once at pony camp when we had a very heavy shower even though he had a rug on. Also gets the shakes if left in the field when raining
He was jumping alright - probably a bit calmer than usual - normally canters at the jumps but was taking a leisurely trot today.
Decided to cut it short. Took him back to the trailer, sponged him down, walked him around - fine in himself, happy to eat grass. Fine when we got back to the yard - left fleece off to travel home.
Weather sunny and quite warm 20+ degrees.
Was that the right thing to do - daughter really cross cos she wanted to do more jumping - would it have just been excited and a bit warm or anything I should be concerned about?

Cookies for getting this far

I can't really make a judgement about the pony as I wasn't there but I think that if you were uneasy about him, you did the right thing cutting the session short. I've had a WelshDxTB with heatstroke and it was VERY worrying. It's a good lesson for daughter, if she wants something she can get on every time, she needs a bike.

Thanks for your comments. He's an old boy - 21 and really does the feel the cold - I wondered whether it was anything to do with the changes in temperature. One minute its cold the next its hot! He is starting to get his winter coat through!

Tell your daughter to be thankful she has a pony! Well done for thinking of the old boy first and she will learn from your judgement to value her pony and maybe you too!

Thanks for you comments, Been down to the yard tonight and he is absolutely fine - I'd just rather be safe than sorry. Think we'll give fun ride tomorrow a miss and just take them both for a quiet steady hack!
