At being really really REALLY annoyed that the horses have been out 1 days since last tueaday cos the YO hasnt got the summer fields ready??!! theyv closed the winter fields so mine cant get out at all. oh how i wish i hadnt paid a month up front.

what would you do.folks??!!

No thats not reasonable of them at all. Even ours are happily out and we have the muddiest, wettest clay bog in the UK to contend with!

Id just put mine out in the winter fields till the summers are ready, youre paying for turnout, cover your ass by having a standby to move to, i wouldnt keep mine in at this time of the year thats ridiculous

I'd be so annoyed!!! mine have been out for a month now. So am I right in thinking that they'll only get four months on their summer fields... if so, time to look for new yard.

By not being ready are you meaning the grass hasnt grown long enough? That is hardly the fault of the yard owner. We are 50 miles south of you and the damage that has been done by the second awful winter in a row has meant the grass has been slow to come. Our summer grazing was rolled and fertilised in the decent week we had in March however it is only now that there is a bit of reasonable growth.
Its give and take on a livery yard and some yards have no turnout at all. Thank the lord I dont have liveries is all I can say. A month "upfront" stops people from behaving like a child that spits the dummy when little irritations happen.

Where abouts are you? Our yard has plenty of grass (lamis is bare)

Your yard sounds like one of my old ones.....move, horses need to be out.

hi frozzy, i dont have to pay that much up front but i do it as a courtesy so the yo is not waiting for money at any time. by not ready i mean the 60 acre field (that does have plenty grass in it) has not been split into paddocks for the horses so they r stood in. yo brought her horses in yesterday so one of them got out on the grass for a few hours and the other in a hard turbout area that he broke out of =-O if they were out during the day id not be so peeved but they arent......every time i ask its 'tomorrow'

OP is in the Glasgow area I believe. We have just gone through the worst two winters on record for us in Scotland (and last summer was no joy either ) and the farmers round here are desperately trying to make a bit of headway. My neighbour has had to roll his cows summer fields twice and has now spent extra money on fertilising twice because the first lot got washed away.
When you own the ground and take management seriously these problems are bound to crop up from time to time. Harrassing the livery owner wont make the grass grow any quicker. I have been a livery in my time too and yards round here are not easy to come by. Some I know have no winter turnout at all. We all want to get animals out at this time of year to get grass, but if horses are turned out too soon before the grass has reached an acceptable height they will look bare within a small space of time.

Frozzy I'm sorry but I really disagree with you. There is no excuss for a YO not providing the services and facilities that they stated that themes would provide. If lack of grass is a problem then they have too many horses and need to cut back. We had NO grass at all in march but proper fertilising and rotating horses has left us with super geaIng this year. It poor planning that results in lack of grass. And it's hardly behaving like a child when your irritated that you are not getting what you payed for!

People are paying for a service theyre entitled to get and if turnout is part of that service they deserve to get it. Staying in costs people an absolute fortune, i bet the yo isnt offerring to pay for the extra bedding, hay and work the liveries are having to do. If the yo was organised, they'd have had their fields divided well before horses were due on it.
With your attitude towards people, we're all grateful you dont have liveries.
At the moment the op's yo is doing way more taking than giving imo

how frustrating

at a yard local to me the fencing (replacements from previous year etc) is never sorted at the same time that the weather is and they could go out, clearly it isn't feasible to sort fencing until the ground is suitable/drier but am presuming you have just had one of those like us down 'ere.

If the grass IS there then I agree that it is very bad planning not to have it ready in time. Poorly run livery yards have no excuse for not being prepared as summer (well the excuse for summer that we get!) comes once a year. If you provide a service then of course there is no excuse if people are paying for it.
Livery yards are unfortunately a bit thin on the ground round here and standards will vary so to get the "ideal" yard is very very difficult. OP may have no alternative but put up with the delay. I would suggest that a deputation of liveries formally get a firm date from the yard owner or request a refund as they will be providing extra feed for their horses.

Whats with the aggression Marydoll ? No I dont have liveries but I do have three friends that keep their ponies with me on an informal basis and I can assure you my animals are treated exactly the same as my friends. We all muck in together and have done for six years with no fall out. You dont know me so kindly do not cast aspersions on my character.

I saw no aggression, but perhaps your comments about children spitting dummies when in fact they are responsible owners wanting (a) what they have paid for and (b) what is best for their horse, led to her response. I have to say, I quite agree with her.

i certainly havent spat the dummy in fact tbh i am trying really hard not to!!!! i have asked once and i was told yesterday, someone else was told last friday....see the pattern. ive got grazing at home and tbh if my youngster didnt need worked so much they would be there. but i cant do anything with him at home he needs more than ridden in the field. feel like im just pouring money down the drain and im bloody knackered i need my summer too :-)

If you can't turn out because YO has not sorted fencing ( have I got that right ? )
Thats ridiculous if was my yard I be out a night with a head torch doing it no wonder YO's get a bad name.
If you have the option I would be looking to move and stop paying in advance unless it's in your contract.

I'd take mine home and find away of fencing off somewhere to work, or hiring a school.

YOs and their foibles are one of the reasons we decided to buy somewhere so that we could keep ours at home.

Ok for starters there was no agression in the post
What you read was a response to your very rude dismissive post to the op, defending imo a very poorly prepared livery yard, you are the one casting aspersions with your "spitting the dummy comments" ;) then youre glad you dont provide livery comments .
The op is paying probably a fair bit of money for said livery which she states should include turnout, if some horse dont get this, it can cause all kinds of problems for owners from monetery To behavior problems in their horses.
She has every right to be well peed off at the shambles that leaves her out of pocket with extra work and a horse stuck inside when they should be out.

I would not consider a yard where all year out turnout wasn't available, if only for 4 or 5 hours a day.
