Horses are more active in cooler weather, they are feeling comfortable, not slugish like in hot weather.

As far as your feed goes...

All food contains energy (calories) some types of feed provide quick calories, like when a human eats a mars bar! Cerials, starches and sugars provide these.

Things like oils and fibers, like chaffs, alfalfa hay and straw, provide slow release calories which keep the horse warm and give it energy without exciting it.. like when a human has wheatabix for breakfast. Oil is a VERY good feed.

So, have a look at what your nuts have in them! Some topline cubes contain barley and molasses, which wizz up lots of horses. You could try feeding something like Calm and Condition, which is barley free... for this very reason... or cutting out the mix and feeding something like unmolasses beet.

In short, go for high fiber, high oil, low sugar low starch, low or no cerial feeds and you won't go far wrong!

I have just had same problems .Took him off haylage and after one night he was different horse.Had the same problems this time last year too much haylage sends him into rodeo and I have the bruises to prove it!!!!!Try haylage first before you mess around with hard feed. Two other horses on our yard have reacted the same too much fizz and rest this time of year.

If she wasn't losing weight on whatever she had before and had enough energy when ridden I wouldn't change it - just go back to whatever you were using, it doesn't sound like she needs the extra
