Well last night i decided i was going to clip my boy for the first time. ( He has been clipped before but not by me)
I thought to myself in the summer "im not going to pay out money for other people to clip him when i can do it my self"

Anyway we started in the stable, got half way through one side and he didnt bat an eyelid, then he decided he'd had enough. So i thought ok ill take him out side to see if he is better. Well he was to begin with then he decided he didnt want to play any more. A couple of the girls came up and lent a hand. So i held him and they tried to finish his clip. Well Jeds way out of everything he doesnt want to do is rearing. Well last night he reared and lunged forward and i got caught in the firing line. As he came down he caught me with both knees. I came away with a bruised arm and a bruised chest!

Any one have any ideas on how to stop him rearing as it is becoming dangerous?

Personally Id sedate hom, its not fair to put you both at risk & make sure next summer you do your homework with the clippers prior to the big clip, to get him used to it!

I think you are very lucky just to get a bruise! My old pony was like this to clip, he wasnt scared, just got fed up easily. I found that doing him in two halves over two days was better. But i made sure i stopped clipping before he started to prat about. (that way he didnt learn that if he pratted about i would stop) Hope that makes sense?
Or just sedate him so its safer for everyone?

you're lucky. i'd try again, he may just have got bored or maybe the clippers were getting a bit warm on his skin. if he stays calm, proceed with caution...make sure there's people around in case something happens, and have a hat and good boots on.
to stop the rearing, i'd have him in a controller halter (knotted rope type) in hand and give it the hardest jerk possible when he goes up. i've never had one fail to decide that it's not that much fun after all, when i've done that.

I clipped mine this weekend - started off on sat night with a twitch on and managed to do half of him before he started pouring with sweat. He doesn't like my other half - he is scared of men - and I needed him to hold him for me!!

Then did the other half yesterday morning out in the sunshine and he was much happier and I managed to do a full clip inc. head.

I was quite amazed at how fine his coat still is - obviously the warmish weather and him having a rug on has made a difference!!

He was good as gold yesterday - think he prefers being outside having it done as the clippers aren't quite so noisy. There is no way I could have done it without a twitch on though!! I can't sedate him because he fights the sedative and it upsets him.

Has your ned been talking to Cat? Started to clip him for first time yesterday, good as gold until he got bored so decided to quit while I was ahead and have another go today.

TBH it's not worth the risk of either of you getting hurt. Give him a dollop of Sedalin that way the experience will be a positve one for both of you and he will get better each time.

ditto twitching... i've seen a twitched horse suddenly reach total snapping point and turn into a ninja with no warning, kicked 3 people in about 1 second. not nice at all. mind you, they deserved it tbh, they'd been making the horse into an equine pincushion for the previous 20 minutes.

Lucky you! Deffo twitch him! Mine just tries to body slam you into a hard surface when hes had enough, you cant do it anywhere too open or her will just dance about. It always happens after the 30 min mark. I tired to do his face on sat and ended up slammed into a wall and after 10 mins of holding his nose shut and stroking his ears he went into a sleep like state and I could do his face, but I still had to hold his nose shut a bit - Ive tried a twitch and I got hurt when it came off so not liking them!!

Unfortunately what with being hogged we go through this pa lava once a month - in between that I trim his mane with scissors if it has a sudden growth spurt!

Tried that but he over powers it as he does with a chifney.

Clippers where not over heating i checked them ever couple of minutes. Think i will go with a sedative next time. Im going to do his legs this week with a twitch as it seems to be quite affective with him.

The mare I had on loan a few years ago was terrified of the clippers so she was twitched and we used to get as much off as possible then do the rest in stages. She did look silly for a few days but it was better than getting bitten and kicked

You were very lucky to come away with bruises, please wear a hat when you're clipping him if he has a tendency to rear.
