I really want to have a go at point to pointing. I am confident rider and have done BE intro. I am desperate to have a do at P2P. I go watch regularly.

So you P2P people

... Any tips? Will I have to go out and buy a point to pointer? Even if I did, can you get training? Can you get rides on other peoples? What is the cheapest way of doing it?

I would even love to go out on morning exercise, but I have no idea where to start.

I live near Newmarket.

Any ideas???

Cheers guys!

If you google the list of trainers on the National Trainers Federation, then that will give you the website with all the trainers in each area, with their phone numbers. Just ring around your local trainers and ask if you can ride out for them. They are usually desperate for people.

Re; Pt to Pting, its unlikely that you will get given rides unless you are best friends with some owners

best way to go about it would be to buy your own horse from Ascot. You could prob pick up an experienced ( but not brilliant) pt to Pter for about £1000. That sort of horse would give you nice rides round the courses but prob wont win anything. Although having said that, there are a lot of horses out there that could be vastly improved with a better sort of work program/feeding program/fittening program, so you may reap some results if you really research what you are doing, and produce/train your horse well.
Be very very careful if you do buy a horse from the sales, a lot of trainers are not honest about injuries etc. Perhaps better to buy through word of mouth if you can but you may end up paying more.
Of course if you have a decent horse buying fund , then the skys the limit!

Its easy to enter the horse in Pts2Pt- you have to hunt them 3 times I think ( or just show up at the meet) and get this card signed by the Master, then you can enter... say the Novice riders race to start with. I'm not sure about the exact qualifying details.

You have to have access to gallops/hurdles as well- its easy to take them to the Newmarket Links/the Heath a couple of times a week, but this all costs money.

Hopefully whatever yard you are working for will give you tips on training and producing the horse and riding in the races. Make sure you pick a good yard to work for!

so do i :P as i am desperate to do some P2Ping at some point

only issue is...EVERYTHING.
money, place for horse, training etc

ah well...maybe when i leave school...

I don't race ride myself (would love to, but don't have the balls required unfortunately!) but I ride out for someone and groom at the P2Ps so I might be able to help you a little too - PM me if you like! We've had some fab horses on the yard through Doncaster sales, might be worth a look but at least you're in the right part of the world for gaining experience. As was already said above I think yards sometimes struggle to get enough competent riders so put word about and you'll likely get something! Good luck!
