I've booked the pups into kennels over christmas :(
Christmas day we will be all over the place, first with OH's family and then with mine, (which will include my 2 year old nephew) so not really appropriate for 2 huge bouncey dogs to come with us, and I don't want to leave them home alone for most of the day.
Boxing day we travel down to London to spend the day with my elderly gran and extended family, so again, not doggy suitable. So I've booked them into kennels for the 25th and 26th.
I feel a bit mean :(

LOL no, I'm sure they will be just fine! I wouldnt do it purely because 2 of mine wouldnt kennel, I'm sure Tys and Bry will be just fine...they dont know its christmas after all!

Well I dont know about Tys and kennels, it'll be his first time. He has a little kennel at home that he goes in so I hope he will be OK. Bryony doesn't care one bit.
It'll just be a shame not to have christmas morning with them, but there's no way we can be around for them for the rest of the day so I guess it is the fairest thing. I will buy them christmas bones for the kennels to give them.

Please check with the kennel - all too often I have to disappoint people when the Christmas presents they have brought for their dogs are not suitable or safe to give. (Strangely it is usually the people who have moaned about the cost of kennelling that have spent most on junk "guilt" presents.)

I provide raw knuckle bones, turkey dinner stuffed kongs, hooves and pigs ears as appropriate to the boarders at Christmas. I don't allow rawhide, the roast bones pet shops sell or the hard munchy Christmas shapes or rasks as these are potential splintering, blockage or choking hazards.

Your dogs should be much happier and safer in kennels than in a crowded house.

Well Bryony has been to these kennels before and they seemed happy enough to feed her the rawhide bones we left for her, so hopefully it will be fine. Im sure they will let us know if there's a problem. Neither of my dogs are fed on a raw diet anymore so I wont be leaving them raw bones, but I LOVE the idea of turkey stuffed knongs!
I wouldn't say they were guilt presents as such, well, maybe they are. I have always bought my dogs bones and treats for christmas, but I am feeling extra bad this year.

Aah what a caring mummy:), you have nothing to feel guilty about they dont know its Xmas and its only for a couple of days.

Just use the situation as a chance for their further developement and socialisation a sort of training session, there that dosnt sound so bad now does it.:D

I like that!

"Tyson and Bryony are off on a christmas socialisation course. Training will include adapting to a strange habitat, and learning to talk respectfully to neighbouring woofers." :D

This is always a problem for people who have dogs, and horses. Personally I wouldn't put my dogs in kennels. I am not judging you, it sounds like a sensible and correct thing for you to do in your situation, but I don't think my dogs would be happy to be left somewhere strange. So I don't ever use kennels.

I use my animals as a very good excuse for not having to venture far from home at christmas, or so I can say "sorry I have to go now, the dogs/horses need feeding". The horses are at home too, so I do have to be there, there is no-one else to help out.

Personally I would prefer to leave them alone in their own home, than alone in a kennel, but at least you know they will be safe and not destroying anything.

Then again i am being mean to my family by insisting they come to me so the dog can have company!!

Not an option for me. We live alone in a pokey old house with buggered heating, nobody in their right mind would want to spend christmas here. The morning is spent visiting OH's family that all gather at his parents house, and the afternoon is spent visiting my family that all gather at my parents house. There will be small children and other dogs to consider so bringing my dogs isn't an option. And, unless I want to spend christmas day alone, in my house, doing nothing... the above plans wont be changing!

They will be together in kennels and tbh, neither of them really give a crap about stuff like that anyway. Im more concerned about Tyson not getting enough exercise and bothering Bryony too much... and from a selfish point of view, Im sad I wont have a Tysie snuggle to look forward to on christmas morning. :(

Yeah i see where you are coming from with the not taking them thing- we have xmas on the 17th aswell (dont ask) and no way would I take dex to that -3 kids under 5!!

I spose I just feel that in kennels they will just be alone- little human contact- strange place- cold?- little exercise where as at home they will alone-little human contact- creature comforts- own beds- warm- can be well exercised before after leaving em.

Well the kennels are inside and heated, with runs attached that are outside, so Tys can kip outside on the concrete all night & Bryony can snuggle inside on her bed. They get walked every day and let out into an enclosed field 3 x a day to chase ball/run about etc. They have it better than they do here :o
... Its just the idea im booting them out at xmas I feel bad about, not the actual fact they are in kennels. B loved it their last time, she stayed for 3 weeks!

I would have no issue with this TBH, they have no concept of human festivals!!!
No different from leaving them in for the summer hols.

You're right of course, it just stilll... feels a bit mean lol :o
Anyway, they are going and they will enjoy their little christmas break, Im sure! And I will have a nice stressfree couple of days

I have nothing to say other than..mean, horrible, shameful, disgraceful, utterly ridiculous, bless, poor things, awwww, cold, shivering, no mammy and daddy.

Just a few things that sprung to mind...........;)

You enjoy yourself at Xmas mind:):D:p

I gues that just about sums it up ^^^ :p

I know they don't have a clue its xmas... but aparently I am the fluffiest of bunnies...

they will be fine..... and will be so happy to see you back on the 27th.. no need to feel guilty you have put their needs first (rowdy children at christmas are not dog friendly) a heated chalet with a run is ideal.

My friend goes away next year for christmas and is sending me her 2 spaniels so that will be 4 spaniels for christmas. 5 if my parents come over so I feel like a boarding kennels!
