My horse is a warmblood x cob (we think) shes chunky anyhow. (not fat.)

I dont rug her at all until october ish time. Shes not clipped, but in winter she will be and i will rug her up again.

Her field has no shelter as such but when its windy/raining all other horses on the yard and most of the yard next door are rugged with lightweight rugs

She does have a no fill sheet but tends to get hotter than most other horses and tbh nips when i put a rug on which indicates to me shes happier naked :D ?

Am i being mean or should she have a no fill sheet on when it rains?

No, you are fine. We have had 24 hours of torrential rain here and its really cold. Aberdeenshire. All mine are blood/sports horses and none rugged. 2 mares were shivering but were otherwise fine. I did wimp out and bring them in but really regretted it as they were a nightmare with the wind.

Nope, not mean at all, all of the horses on our yard bar 2 are out without rugs on. our horses (ranging from thin skinned PRE's through to connemaras & Cob X's) are currently out overnight, in a field with little true 'shelter' rugless, non have melted away so far. when we start clipping, we will have them out in the day and in at night, depending on the clip they will get a suitable rug.

yeah i did bring her in and put a rug on to warm her up etc (well take away the damp) but she got really fidgettey, stamped on my foot so i turfed her back out naked with a shouting at. serves her right lol.

I just felt right as i would rather underrug than over rug. :)

No, some people are over protective of their horses. My current horse is a chubby WB and she stays out with no rug on, regardless of the weather, in fact I am more likely to bring her in for a few hours if it is really hot and the flies were bothering her, than because it was raining.

No, of course she shouldn't.
She's a horse, not a 'My Little Pony'. They have their own WATERPROOF coats and really don't need anything else, unless they are vulnerable animals (ill or old).
And, although I wouldn't be happy with the nipping, she's doing the best she can to tell you that she doesn't want a rug!
There are far too many people listening to the rug manufacturers' marketing teams, rather than their horses.

ETA our 30 yr old mare is out without a rug 24/7 and has been since the beginning of April.

Thanks guys, knew i should listen to my gut :)

Some days its been peeing down in the morning the sunny etc so i never know what to do lol!

Willl leave her till it gets colder in end of sept/oct then she can have a no fill on :)

Each horse has different needs and only you know what is best for your horse. If she is fine without a rug then don't let peer pressure make you rug her up!

I did go up and rug the horses last night because it was really peeing it down and windy, though it's a job and a half rugging up 8 horses on your own in the wind, especially as I had to remove all their sopping wet fly rugs first. But TBH at times, I rug more for the owners than for the horses!. Last night was cold though. I always rug if a horse is shivering. Some horses cope better than others in the rain. It does not always depend on breeding. Our skinniest TB can actually cope better than one of the big warmbloods. If your mare is a 'hot horse', as is one of mine, then she probably does not need to be rugged unless you see her shivering.
