I go on this 'guilt trip' that I'm not riding my cob enough, alot of this is down to being tired, due to work.I get up at 5.30 am and do him,so everything is ready on my return from work, but,if I don't ride I feel really bad! He is lunged once a week and ridden maybe twice,TBH if he has not been ridden for weeks,he would still be like he was ridden yesterday,as good as gold. I do not want a sharer,(Been there with my old mare!)but, feel sometimes I should make the effort, and with a Summer of F&M round here, the hacking has been limited! Do you ride every day or once in awhile....I know alot depends on the horse, but, my cob was not a cheap horse and really should do more, not that he seems fazed or bothered about it! Please don't shoot me down for not riding enough,I just wonder if I'm normal!

You sound perfectly normal to me. Sometimes I ride 4 or 5 horses a day for 6 days on the run......other times I don't ride any of them for a month. I do what I feel like doing - my horses are happy whether they go out once a day or once every couple of months.

What is normal?

As long as the horse is happy and you are what is the problem. Enjoy the times you have out together and don't spoil it and make it a chore.

lol....I haven't ridden one of my cobs for2 yrs!!! The other one I ride as and when. If I can't be bothered I don't ride. They're not competion horses and they live out 24/7 so boredom isn't a factor..

I permanently beat myself up over not riding enough and put myself under tremendous pressure to ride more - my friend always tells me 'not to turn a pleasure into a chore' . I try to tell myself as long as I spend time with my boy every day - just to groom him or give him a good back scratch then I shouldn't feel too bad!!

Totally normal. Mine have barely been ridden all summer, yet in the past week we've been out every evening. No flies now you see!

Sounds about right to me. My boy hasn't been out for a couple of weeks, for one reason or another. But i am about to go out in a minute, and can't wait.

Just enjoy your Ponio, that's what it's all about

If you're not competing, and therefore he doesn't need to be fit, then it doesn't really matter. And he's still nice and quiet even if he hasn't been ridden for a while, so that's not a problem.

The only thing I would say is that I'd be careful about overdoing it when you do ride as he won't be very fit.

You're very lucky to have such an easy horse!

I do ride both of mine 4-6 times a week, but then I am competing, and they are both quite sharp so need the work - they could probably do with being ridden every day really, but I just don't have the time/motivation!

I also have a little companion cob who hardly ever gets ridden - he goes out for a little walk about once a fortnight with a young girl who who occasionally helps me. He's fine, very happy and healthy.

There's nothing worng with that.

I'm usually tired after work so i tend ride in the morning and do everything else in the evening otherwise it can sometimes feel like too much effort. I suffer from IBS which can make me very sluggish, mornings are def when i have the most energy.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. You don't want to turn horse owning from a pleasure to a chore and with possible dangers attached, for instance, if you are tired, you may miss something that you should notice and normally would. As your cob is like ours, can be left for months without getting excitable, just enjoy spending what time you want in his company. he won't love you any less for it.

_OC_ what are you on??? Your cob has no idea if he is/was a cheap horse on not, or if he has potential to do more, or not. Think logically given the option of lolling round the field, sun baking and eating, or working his little socks of each day, what would he choose?? He is well care for and happy, that is all that matters.

This post has made me feel so much better...... I feel I should ride 5 out of 7 days a week... dont know why just feel its right, but dont always have the inclination to do so.

Merlin doesnt get fizzy at all and doesnt even seem to lose fitness very quickly and definately doesnt mind being in the field 24/7.

So why do i feel bad if i dont ride.... someone let me know please

Sounds pretty normal to me. I ride once or twice a week in Summer - horse doesn't mind (lazy...). Have to ride more in Winter because they don't get that much turnout. So Summer's the time for us both to relax.
