Ok. Having been looking for a horse for a while for me (sidney is Hubbys)
Have been looking for slightly older, safe and sane horses to do a bit of low level jumping, hacking, schooling.
Have had not luck what so ever.
We went yesterday to a dealer of very good reputation. Many of you on here have recommended the person. I went to look at a 9 year old mare. I fell in love with a 15.3HH chunky chap.
I'm nervous when I ride new horses but i took him out and had the best canter on a hack I've had for years - i felt SO safe. We had so much fun and despite being scared at first I really enjoyed it and so did he. Dealer commented how well we did together.
His schooling is ok-ish but needs some work - he trys but his steering is in need of some work. The Dealer says she will work on him for me for a week or so.
One minor issue. He's only 4.
Honest question looking for an honest answer - am i nuts?

no

obviously sounds like you enjoyed yourself.....is there any chance you could go for a second ride?

No of course you are not nuts! Sounds like the two of you did really well together. I wouldas jenbleep says go for a second ride, and see how things go then.

There are 4 year olds and 4 years olds. Many are much too much for a nervous/novice rider but some are absolute saints on legs and the chap you have just tried may well come into this catergory. Ok, you may well have to do a bit more with him eg schooling than you would with an older horse but if he is as genuine as he seems to be then you could end up with an absolute cracker!!! Go see him again and maybe take someone else along (an instructor?) to give yo a second opinion - this might help you feel more confident about making a decision

Remember with a dealer you have more come back if the horse isn't right for the purpose intended than with a private seller....

Depends on the horse ,our young horse is the safest, kindest horse on the yard.Don't rush into buying it and the dealer is bound to flatter you, not that I'm it wasn't true.
We just bought a 4 year old pony for our 2 year old granddaughter and 1 month on it is the best pony I have ever known, calm ,safe and patient

No - not nuts

I bought a four year old in Jan and worried I'd done the right thing but he just gets better and better and pleasantly surprises me all the time! I can hack him down the main road on his own with buses, wagons, etc.

You can get some 10 year olds that are nutters - they don't have to be young to be silly! I'd just take your time about your decision.

Good luck

I am soo one of those ppl who plans everything out, know exactly what I want and then go for something totally out of the blue!! If it felt right and you two had fun together I would definately go on your own gut feeling as nothing would be worse than losing him on a 'Yeah but...' thought.

sounds like an ideal match - I know what you mean though, I would be nervous of a youngster, but then again my 15 year old can be spooky and silly at times.

would you mind telling me which dealer you used as I am looking at the moment and want the same kind of horse? PM if preferred

thank you
