that to get a horse fitter that you reach a platu where they can only get so fit on just grass and start needing a feed?

the reason i ask is that im getting my mare fitter and have found that she seems to just run out of energy so im guessing that i need to give her a feed to be able to get her to the next level of fittness

confused? i am!

what are your thoughts?

I am no expert, but i think you are right in what you are thinking, if her workload has increased then yes i'd say so.

Yup. Totally agree, especially in a horse kept on restricted grazing.

My mare now gets Staypower cubes (Dodson & Hodson) and they do seem to be working.

I figured it's counter productive in terms of weight loss/toning to not feed her as she can't keep up with what I'm asking of her without some additional feeding for energy.

Yes, she's not getting the righ kind of nutrition to build muscle and increase stamina - I would suggest that you phone a couple of the feed company nutrtionists and tell them what you need and see what they suggest.
They really are very helpful, and unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of equine nutrition and a good bit of experience, you may as well make use of their free service - yes they will flog you a product, but they will hopefully at least flog you the right one!
