Who turns my horses out when it rains

YES I have limited turnout but I put out piles of hay and my horses don't run around like hooligans! and they don't trash the fields.

So can anyone explain WHY they should be stuck in?? sorry for the rant but I can see a VERY long winter ahead with my horses being stuck in

Mine go out by nine at the latest, come hell or high water (both of which we have had over the last few days!). No rugs, no field shelter bar the hedge. They have hay at 10.30 and again at around 2.30 and are coming in in the dark at about 6.30. No way could I keep them in all day.

Surely it's personal choice? I would happily have left my horse in today if he'd had some company. It was a hideous day.

Do you own the field? If not, and the owner doesn't want the horses out, then that is how it is I am afraid. If your horse is stood eating hay in the field, he may as well be standing in his stable eating hay.

I turn the silly beast out in any weather really. Although have to agree with SallySmith, if anyone else had wanted to keep in yesterday I happily would've. Only because our fields are already churned to mud and the day off of them in the rain could have done them good.

I didnt let my horse out today because the fields are too wet. Simple as - I dont want the field trashed. He was perfectly happy in his yard and stable, he had hay, water and shelter! all he wanted

I agree it is personal choice and also what suits the horse. Mine went out for 2 hours this am and looked miserable.... (I've only had her 6 months) She would happily stay in a stable all day, but I think she should be a 'horse', wander round a field and eat grass.
I do understand that paddocks need looking after, especially when there is limited turnout.... but if yours are happy to stand and munch hay then no probs.....

I did turn out today but only because the others were all going out for a couple of hours. She gets silly, trashes her field (its not my land) and is damn miserable, strange for a horse that up until July lived out perfectly happy 24/7

She now much prefers her stable when its chucking it down!!

My lad is normally out 24/7 in winter in all weathers, even snow...although he does have a field stable to go into if he wants. He is currently in at night but that is because he had laminitis and I am introducing him back to grazing during the day gradully. Because he is on a small area and being strip grazed the field is a bit of a muddy mess in places, but I do not worry as I know it will grow back come spring and dry weather. If he was in when it was wet on my clay field he would live in pretty much all year! I rent a field though so can do what I want.

No, you are not alone! I have two who are out 24/7 and my "working" lad in overnight, but only because that is easier for me to have a clean dry horse to ride and saves the trek to the paddock - he does go out regardless of the weather though from 8am until 6pm, often he is the only one out!! this morning he went out in a gale force storm, but being a welsh cob the weather just doesn't bother him!! I find with all mine they'd rather be out - the reason I left my last yard was limited turnout and I'm totally convinced it made my older cob's joint problems a whole lot worse being stuck in a stable all day and night.

I didn't turn out today - the weather was so foul that all she'd have done was either reverse into the hedge and stand looking miserable not eating anything, or traipse around the gateway wanting to come in, and ruin the grass. I decided that she'd get more to eat being in, and for the amount of mud she would potentially make, Id save her grass for another day. She had a plastic ball full of nuts, carrots and apples sliced up and scattered everywhere and a massive net so she wasn't bored. It's rare that I don't turn out but today was an exception.

i know the feeling i'm the only one at my yard excpt yo who has 7 horses and she doesnt put hers out even if its just slightly wet sometimes i put mine out on his own but he doesnt enjoy it the same

he's only a baby, hopefully moving to a new yard soon though x

I love her (even though she has gone back to her foul gate-hopping ways

Dizz, LL and LC are out, at least I think they are... Daughter is at the yard/s so they could be anywhere by now, maybe even en route to the new yard.

At the new yard they'll be in at some point in the evening and out at some point in the morning, but they'll be out in pretty much any weather

Mine went out for a couple of hours but were happy to come back in. If all they're going to do is stand around n the mud looking miserable I don't see the point.

Mine also went out for a bit, but were very grateful to come in at 2! To be honest they would be very grateful if I let them stay in with hay, but as I wasn't riding they had to face the elements (whilst I went back to a nice warm house!)
