Im looking to get my first horse this year (at the age of 27! Good things come to those who wait i suppose!) It worries me slightly that im the only horsey person i really know! A friend of my mums used to have a horse and still rides and obviously I have my riding instructor at the riding school i go to, but I have no one to ride with and feel like I would be a bit "alone".
Does that make sense? Am I the only one?
 
If you are going to keep your horse at livery then you will soon make freinds/riding partners there. Or if not, then join your local riding club where you will soon make lots of contacts.

I didn't own my own horse till I was 32, although I had shared and worked with horses since I was 8.
 
I am lucky enough to be able to keep my horse at home so wont make livery friends, joining the local riding club sounds a good idea. Do you do it through the riding school? I'll google!
 
Plenty of riding clubs or bridleway groups if you are less interested in competitions. Or if you buy a particular breed then there might be a breed society or branch of a breed society running things. Then there are the endurance and Trec people, your local BHS committee will organise events/talks, etc. It depends on what your equine interests are.
 
I didn't own my own horse til I was 30 and I don't come from a horsey family. Luckily I have a friend who has always had horses and I keep my horse at her house. Since having the horse I have made lots of horsey friends who have helped me out - as well as lots of helpful advice from HHO of course!! You soon realise that it doesn't matter how much you know about horse care - you soon find out how much you don't know once you are an owner!
Join your local riding club or go for group lessons at your local riding school, you'll soon make lots of horsey friends. Oh and log onto here each day, if you don't already!!
 
I didnt know anyone but through the livery yard know loads of peeps :-)) and you could join a riding club if you are keeping it not at a yard.

it will be fine, I was 30 when I got my first (6yo IDxTB, 16.2 but then grew some more to bleedin 17hands) - hes now 14 and we have a 4 yo Haflinger mare we backed last year with instructors help (well she did most!) - so you may not end up with just the one!

Its nice to be able to ride out with OH who doesnt really love horses but who likes to ride his police horse type through the park and try to beat his record for how many times he is stopped and his horse admired.....

When I bought my horse 2 years ago (my 1st) I knew noone and knew nothing. Sometimes you just have to take that 1 small step...
 
Well non of the riding clubs are within a 50 minute drive! typical!
Im hoping my Instructor will help me look at horses. Buying A horse seems worse than house hunting!!
 
How near to the Cumbrian border are you? I am in a riding club based on the outskirts of Carlisle. A lot of our activities are done at Blackdyke. PM me if you are interested.
