I have a 14 hand welsh x friesian mare, and i just cant get it out of my head that i'm too big for her, well too heavy anyway.

I've always ridden bigger horses and when i was looking for my own I managed to 'aquire' my Suzi. Long story, but basically the parents of a friend of my OH had died and Suzi was the only animal left on this bleak little farm in the middle of no where and so for a nominal fee she came to live with me.

She's certainly not exactly what i was looking for (15h+ heavy cobby thing and not, never, no way a mare!) but somehow i've fallen for her hook line and sinker. Shes a mareish mare and hates everyone but me (well they say animals end up like their owners! LOL)

Im still trying to fitten her up at the moment after two years of being stood in a field before i had her, so all we're doing at the moment it walking and trotting. She doesn't seem to be struggling carrying me, but that doesn't stop me worrying. Also when she is fitter, all I want to do is hack and maybe a bit of low level dressage, not interested in jumping her.

Now I know i look gangly on her (im 5'7" ish) but thats not the problem, it's just that i'm worried i'm too heavy for her at about 11 stone.

SO what do you recon?

ps sorry for the long rambling post xx

Little difficult without a photo, but going from her breeding I would have said not at all!

Ditton above comment. From your description of her breeding I'd say no you're not too big but without a photo it's hard to say. I'm the same weight as you and an inch taller and my boy is a 13.2hh Fell pony, just backed as well. He manages no problem.

I wouldn't say you'd be too heavy for her at all.

You'd know if you were anyway as she would dislike you mounting, would dip her back as you got on and would prob plant her feet and refuse to move when you were on!

Stop worrying and enjoy her xx

no, I wouldn't say you are too heavy for her. Obviously it's hard to know for sure without seeing her butshe has some pretty solid breeding so I can't see she should have a problem...

I have a 15/1 connie x tb mare and i weigh a stone heavier and am same height. I worry too that I am too big and wish she was 16hh but she seems fine for the hacking and odd bit of dressage and tiny jumping we do.

welshies are strong little things... my 13.2 welsh c manages to jump and bomb off with me just fine ;D
She'll manage your weight easily, especially since she's a friesian cross as well!
I look ridiculously gangly on my boy, I ride so short to avoid kicking his knees :p
Have fun with your girl, and enjoy pony squishing!!!! :D

My physio said my 13.2hh Connie type chap (chunky whp, leg at each corner type) would carry up to about 10 stone plus tack etc so I stick to that. Height wise you'd seem fine. Having said that 30 years ago my dad (5ft7, about 11stone) used to hunt my similar build 13.2hh all day, with dad wearing very heavy wool red coat etc, and the pony was still full of running at the end of a big day, so I guess it is down to the individual pony.
