I'm going to be helping a friend out with general care of her pony as she's lacking in time and I miss being around horses so I'm more than happy to do the everyday chores. However she has offered the opportunity to ride, personally I feel that I am far too big/heavy for him! He's a 13.3hh 9yr old Highland x Connie and is a chunky monkey. I'm about 5'7 and weigh around 11 stone (although apparently don't look it, must all be muscle :p). What worries me the most is that I've not ridden regularly for a few years so my seat is not going to be as light as it used to be! Friend is probably a bit lighter and much shorter if that makes any difference.
Any thoughts?

I am sure you friend would not have made the offer if she thought you were too heavy so it sounds like you would be fine. Enjoy :)

Baa, my 6 ft friend has been riding my highland :D I'm 5'8 and about the same weight as you, my highland's 14,1ish and he really doesn't show any sign of struggling!

Of course you're not too heavy - these ponies originate from weight carrying stock able to carry a whole deer and sometimes a man as well, they're strong, good luck and enjoy yourself.

i'm a bit over 12st 7 and ride a 13.3 welsh...she has NO problem! :D

I am losing weight, but it's a.personal choice, b.because my saddle is soon to be treeless and c. it will mean i can ride the finer horses at college! :)

go for it

Providing the owners saddle fits well and can accomodate you as in the seat size which needs to spread the weight well (not that your heavy) but someone who is shorter and lighter may use a saddle that is more suited to their size, so that is something you'll need to check if anything. :)
