My four year old has been broken in professionally and I starting to hack him. Friend took this picture and not sure if I look to big for him I'm 5ft 7 and weigh 12stone 3 he's 15.1 and 490kg

You only have 20kg of room for tack and clothes based on the 20% rule
But that rule only applies if he’s in good shape and well muscled which he may not be as only newly backed and young

And for me a four year old should be 15% max, possibly only 12.5%.

If it's a typical photo then I'm really sorry but the fact he isn't standing square even in front gives you your answer. Sorry!

Thanks for the replies Ive lost two stone so I'm keeping going with it do you think I'm too tall for him ( not much I can do about height) as I'm happy to let my friend ride until hes stronger
That sounds like an ideal plan. Lucky horse to have such a good start and a thoughtful owner. Good luck with the last bit of weight loss, I'm very impressed by what you've managed already! Maybe you could do in-hand stuff with him too, in the meantime?

What a lovely little horse, lucky you!
I’d be aiming for a max of 70kg, so if you have someone else to ride him in interim that sounds like a good plan, by the time you have lost a bit more and he has strengthened up there will be no stopping you as a partnership

Well you're both going in the direction for a successful partnership then.

I'm nearly 5'8 and one of mine is just about 15hh so height of both human and horse isn't a linear thing. A lot will depend on how narrow your horse is, and your own proportions. But I suspect you'll be fine overall.

I had to get my weight a bit down to ride my baby horse because she didn't grow, and the best thing for both of us was to do tons of walking in-hand. She got to see the world and is now a wonderful, wonderful hack, and I got so fit!

Well done for asking OP! It can be a tricky subject. When I was too heavy for my then 3yo I took him out hacking in hand, it helped me get my steps in and lose some weight and it also means that my horse is now pretty much bombproof to hack (excluding the odd baby moment) as he has seen everything and had the confidence of me being on foot to get him through any sticky moments - so I would definitely recommend doing that!

I'm impressed that you've already lost 2 stone, that's well done. I should think once he's muscled up & a bit older you will have lost a bit more and that would be just about perfect. Not too tall for him at all.
