I have a shetland x welsh cob (he's like a proper coloured cob shrunk in the wash, very feathery!) who was used at a riding school, and I bought him when they were closing and desperately searching for homes for their horses. I've had him a year now, he has been to a couple of in hand shows but other than that has just been a field companion to my semi-retired mare. I'm hoping to break him to drive maybe next year but am wondering whether I can ride him to fitten him up a bit and get him out and about? I'm just under 8st, 5ft 4? Would it be unfair to ride him? I could maybe put an ad up for someone to ride him? What do you all think?

You are my weight and height and imo that is fine!

He will easily be able to carry you!

I would have thought you wouldn't be too heavy. A had a 12.2 Section B that I rode as a teenager until I got ridiculously tall for him(I'm 5'7") - was about 9 1/2 stone when I stopped riding him (I'll never see that weight again

, but now have a 16.2 middle-heavyweight hunter type so it doesn't matter

Is that you? You look very slim so would say you would be fine on him!

Kinda thought you were joking when you told me you had a shetland x cob!!

You will be fine!! I would ride stirrupless if it was me, for the simple reason that it might be a tad more comfortable !!

Good luck, take a few pictures please

hehe

Not at all too heavy - I used to have one very similar, and rode him down to the local shop, and back with groceries when my car broke down. I'd be about 8 stone then.

Can't stop wondering about the logistics of a Shetland crossing with a Welsh cob...which was sire and which was dam?

Guess I'm just bored at work on a Friday!

Would love to see a pic of you on him, he looks very sweet.

justaj1ffy - the dam was a shetland and the sire was a naughty coloured cob stallion escaping from a field at the riding school!!
Ok then, I'm going to get him a saddle and give it a go at least if he tries to buck me off I don't have far to fall!!! I'll let you all know!!

I ride my 11.1hh and I'm 5'4 and weigh 48kg (which is like 7.5 stone?) and last year even rode a Shetland (that was very on the miniature side!) and the pony had less problems than I did! I think he'll be fine!

Though I do agree with xGinnyx - if you can ride stirrupless it might be easier for you, I find that riding with stirrups usually feels odd on smaller ponies... xD
