am i too old to learn to ride ?

Never too old! And yes, I'd say 99.9% riding schools do adult only lessons. I expect at first you will be on a 1-1 basis. Go for it, and enjoy!

You are definitely NOT too old! You can learn to ride at any age - my mum started when she was in her 50s :) I didn't sit on a horse until I was 16 either, so hardly a young'un :D

Do you know of any riding schools near you? It would be worth giving them a call and organising some lessons - you'd probably be better having a few private lessons first until you are ready to join in with group lessons. A lot of RS's have lessons just for adults so don't worry that you'll be put in with a bunch of 5 year olds on shetlands.

The majority of people going to the riding schools near me are adults. My mum was in her late 40s when she learnt. Private lessons to start are a good choice. Please go for it, horses will change your life.

my god, you are a baby at 20!! man at our yard started at 45, two years later he has his own horse and will be out hunter trialing next year!

I started having riding lessons when I was 41 and bought my first horse 3 years later. I often wish I had started at a younger age, but who knows, maybe I wouldn't been bitten quite so badly by the horse riding bug when I was younger.

I had lessons in an adult beginners group and then progressed to private lessons.

Go for it ... you are never to old to ride!

Too old?!! You are merely a twig on the tree of life, go forth, branch out and flower, you'll never stop growing until you die!!

God no, go for it!! I wish I'd learnt for the first time at 20 rather than 6 sometimes, I would have been braver and taken it more seriously!

Heavens no! Someone better informed than I will tell you the name of the Scandinavian air hostess who started riding in her 20s and 8 years later was in her country's Olympic dressage team.

Nobody is ever too late to learn anything!!!

Or Jock Paget; started riding at 18 and is now a Badminton winner and Olympic medal winner :)

Haha! No way are you too old to learn! I used to work for a guy who didn't start riding until his late 40s, he went on to be very successful show jumping by the time he was mid-50s competing in Florida and all over Canada on the A-circuit. Go for it! As others have said, you're never too old to learn something new!

No way - perfect age if you ask me, old enough to research, read and complement what you do in your lessons but still young enough to bend and bounce!

An Olympic rider didn't start riding until her mid 20s. Can't remember her name, but she was Swedish. She was a pilot, and was visiting friends in the UK and asked if she would like to go hunting. She said yes, thinking it was shooting, and was presented with a horse to ride the next morning! She went hunting, was hooked on riding and went on to buy first a show jumper, and then an eventer and represented her country.

So no, you are not to old to begin riding!

Good god, no. Why would you be too old? When was 20 to old for ANYTHING?

Wait... when did I start thinking 20 was young?!

Go for it! My husband (early forties) started riding about a year ago. The biggest problem I have is getting him off my horse!

We had a lady at our riding school who came to learn - she was 78! She set herself two goals a year - that year was to be able to ride well enough to go on a hack and have a canter and the other one was to do a sky dive!!!!!

She managed the hack - bless her, she was half blind and nearly deaf, but she was a game old bird. I don't know whether she managed the sky dive though.

The oldest I have seen was 72 and had lost her husband earlier that year, she decided to learn to ride and scuba dive. She did really well at both. Honestly 20 is nothing!!
