Tarquin is now progress really well, I have been riding him for about 7 weeks now and he was turned from the broncing bolting loon pot to a normal well mannered hack. We only walk and trot at the moment as he was really panicky about trotting when I first broke him in and this led some big accidents and him not letting me get back on for a few months. Now he is hacking out really well, and I was thinking we might try a canter. Call me crazy but I was going to attempt this first time on a hack as he is quite wound up about the school after his experiences and a five year old with poor balance in a 20 x 40 is not good. I figured on a slight incline behind a steady horse is best, after all thats how I've done it with most racehorses I've ridden. Well to cut a long story short today I was not planning to canter but we were having a good trot along a bit of grass and he lightened his forehand and popped into canter himself in a calm fashion. I was so shocked I pulled up quickly but gave him loads of praise, my hacking partner was shocked too. He was so good, I think all the ground work and time I've taken (it's taken about 9 months to win his confidence and get on him) is now paying off, he wasn't even stressed. But I will leave it another while before asking him again unless he offers it. He's such a babe, thats why I love horses. Sorry long self congratulating post.
