I'm trying to decide if to buy a compact digital camera (looking at Casio EX-FH100) or a compact digital camcorder to record some picture of me jumping. I'd like to be able to have some videos but also be able to pull off some still's (mid air) for pictures. I'd look at spending up to £300, Most will be voe on HD laptop / tv.

Does anyone have any recommendations or particular likes / dislikes?

lumix bright orange waterproof and drop proof camera is around 300. I attach it to my hat for HatCam and the pictures are amazingly clear. The stills are pretty good to. Plus i drop it all the time and it has survived!

the problem with a digital compact is that you always get a slight delay before the pictures are taken usually meaning you miss the actual jump.I had this problem hence why hubby went and bought a digital SLR camera. He got a decent Canon EOS camera on ebay for just over £200. These 2 pics were taken in one jump which shows why it pays to have the best you can.

Mr FigJam has a Panasonic (Lumix) GF1 as a "little" camera for when he can't be bothered/isn't able to lug around full SLR kit. It's done pretty well taking quite sharp images, although has a fixed lens so no zoom etc. It can record video too.

I was lucky enough to be passed on a Canon SLR from a family member & tbh it takes better pics than a lot of official photographers!! Haven't bought pics since I got it! I bought a Flip video recorder too which is so easy to use. Edits with ease & can upload to YouTube easy too. Best 'camcorder' I've had!! xx

If you want jumping pictures then you're best bet is to get a DSLR, you can pick up an entry level one for a little more than what you stated, or if you shop around I'm sure you could find one cheaper, or if you're prepared tob buy second hand.
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/75075/show.html -Canon EOS DSLR - for under £400.
I have to say I have no idea about a camcorder though! If it were me I'd get the DSLR, and opt to buy a cheap camcorder! You'll never get results like a DSLR with a compact camera, no matter how good the photographer is!!

I have a Nikon DSLR, which I far prefer!

This is a photograph that I took last summer, its not quite pro quality, but I am pretty happy with it.

My Dad isn't quite as good with it, but managed this

Then I have two HD camcorders - one pocket sized, and one the normal hand sized - both Sony that weren't too expensive for video

For comparison (note these have all been pulled from fb so quality will be lower than expected anyway):

Still from a normal video camera:

Still from an HD video camera:

And photo from a 'normal' camera:

Phoro from an SLR (sorry don't have any horse ones so just a random):

Really pleased with my Fujifilm HS10 - very fast and can also do incredibly quick continuous shooting (something like 14 FPS at full MP). Takes really good quality photos and HD video and remarkably good value online. I had a look at a lot of other cameras, up to about £600, and I definitely chose the right one. A friend has had an earlier model for years and took absolutely cracking shots of me eventing, despite never having taken pics of horses before, let alone jumping.

I have the Casio Exilim EX-FH20 which has a setting for sports photo's where it will take up to 40 pics per second so you never miss the crucial part of a picture! All you do is point and press the button just before the piece of action you want to capture and then pick the best picture(s) from the sequence. It also has a great HD video and slow-motion video.

Only downside so far is that it drinks AA batteries!

I picked mine up for just under £200 on ebay although they are a fair bit more in the shops.

Another for the Canon EOS. The sports mode is great. As other posters have said, you need to decided if you want pics or video, neither will be great at the others job. How about getting a decent SLR if you can get one on ebay and a secondhand camcorder. I have both and find I use the camera most. Usually the camcorder for dressage so I can slag myself off after:D

I hve a nikon coolpix L120, example of quality.
