We have just got a American Quarter horse on loan with view to buy. Was a stallion until recently has been gelded and backed. We are hoping to fitten him up and use him for polocrosse. His sire is Double tough Harlan.

does anyone else have any of this lovely breed. Photos would be good!!

My little polocrosse mare is QH x TB - has a massive bottom and can leave very long skid marks when you ask for a dead stop in the fields!!!

Our party piece is stopping dead with the balls, so that everyone else flies straight by (think top gun!):)

Has the sweetest nature too, but don't know enough QH's to know whether this is normal

Hope to see yours at a tournie this season!

I have a quarter horse cross, I bought her because the girl across the road has a fantastic natured horse and I asked about his breeding - his sire was a quarterhorse - anyway to cut a long story short my new mare turned out to be related to her horse. I would choose one anyday and would definitely have another. Huge bums though!!! My mares trick is 'airs above the ground' when she gets frisky in the field - an amazing movement - I'm so impressed.

Not always ;) Like thoroughbreds and arabians, they come in all shapes and sizes.

The traditional, smaller, shorter backed 'type' are muscley, yes, but nothing like the obscenities that are some 'halter bred' horses (beef cattle)

Great breed, intelligent, willing, easy to train, generally docile and I have yet to meet a nasty one and I am falling over the things here. Incredibly versatile and I should think they would be very useful at polocrosse.

I have (counts on fingers) 10 QH's or Paints (same thing, just with white added) here now, plus 6 half breds. Most are the traditional type, my Paints are more halter type.

All but the bay in my signature are QH's or Paints, the babies are half bred paints.

Pictures in a minute. Photobucket is playing up.

Zeus herds naturally:

He's also quite pretty I think

This is a Belgian draft/QH x, he is only 15h, excellent roping horse

My Paint mare is more halter type than any of my QH's. She actually does have the classic 'backside of a cook'

4 month old Paint colt by Zeus, he has his Mom's huge butt.

This is a 3 year old Quarab filly, also by Zeus. Arab head, QH body and metabolism (VERY good doer) and her Mom's rather diva-ish nature is mellowed a bit by the QH.

Another Paint (he is half AQHA), he is 16.1h

Lovely photos. Will post some of freddie once we have tidyed him up. He is a bit light at the mo and lacking in muscle etc.

I bred a partbred QH and chose the stallion because of the breed's reputation of good temperaments. I kept him til he died. He was wonderful. Would have another any day.

Double Tough Harlan is a buckskin triple bred Harlan stud. Harlan was born in 51 and died in 73. Harlan was by Hank H by King and out of Dixie Beetch. Harlans mother and Berts mother were full sisters. He was primarily a calf roping horse, although his get did about everything from quarter racing to reining to kids horses but most are good ranch and roping horses. Would love to see a pic of your horse!:)

Here's my Quarter. She's by Justa Little Tangy out of Shining Lolita She's registered with the AQHA as Lolita Little Tangy, is now 3 and is in training for reining classes. I am now a 100 per cent fan of the QH race...cant speak highly enough of them under every aspect. My next horse will also be American. I feel another QH coming on soon :)
This is her on the 17th of March.

I have an American Quarterhorse, really a fantastic breed if you don't want a tall horse. I think that they are a bit like border collies and need to keep their brain active.

I've got two QH crosses, a mare & a gelding, rising 6, going really sweetly and the cuddliest people ever! who I am thinking of looking for lovely homes for (baby on the way so sensibly priced) so if anyone is interested then pm me for masses of photos & info!

We get them all sizes here, I have mature purebreds ranging from 14.2h to over 16h, like tb's and arabians, size depends on type and bloodlines.
Agree that they are a great breed and do like to be doing something.

Zeus does active really well - not :D

Some lovely pics! I've got 5 purebreds, 1 partbred and a 7/8 paint plus 2 foals due. All my pics are on my work computer so can't post at the moment. Fantastic breed, can't recommend them enough.

PMSL! :D They are a funny lot, it does look as if they've been on the razz the night before. Apparently, it is most exhausting spending 70% of ones time eating. This happens two or three times a day that all of them are down and sleeping. So much for a big tough stallion eh?
...and this morning :)

ps. Your little lady is coming on very nicely, when are you aiming to get her out for the first time? I do like her so much.

Fantastic pictures.

Mine is 15.1 which is great for me to get off and on without any strain on either of us, lol. A friend just back from the US saw her on Friday and said she was a giant amongst horses compaired to those she'd been working with over there.

As you say it does depend on the type and bloodline, my personal choice would be around 15 to 15.2.

Andy, I like them small too, I can just about get on them then.:o

Several of my Boarders are ropers and their horses are only 15h, they prefer them small because stepping off is easier.
