Just wondered if anyone else has this problem - my boy wears a fleece, a duvet then his Amigo rug on top, and every morning the Amigo rug is really damp to the touch

It isn't where he lies down, I can tell when he has done that by the shavings all over him, and the stable roof doesnt leak. Wondered if he could be sweating up overnight and all the sweat is wicking out of the duvet/rugs but he never looks sweaty when I change his rugs in the morning. It only seems to have been since the cold weather started - any ideas please?

Mmmm, guess it must be that - but I wouldn't have thought it would go through the duvet and the rug like that, and I would have expected to see sweat marks on him in the morning? Have never known of it with any other horse I have owned

Yes definately sweating! Have had the same with Owen once..as soon as I reduced his rugs the top rug was no longer damp. Like you no signs/marks of sweating on the body!

OMG I feel really awful now

- I will take the duvet off tonight and banish it from the yard

It has been -2 overnight though, so I thought cold enough to merit it

When you say a duvet, do you actually mean a duvet?? Lol ive never heard of this? Lol

Yep - I had to go out any buy myself a new duvet this winter so Josh could have my old one

I have used them on horses for years, and quite a few people at my yard do too - of course not on b****y Josh any more

Cant say ive ever heard of it being used! Do they just stay in place under another rug or do you have to use a circingle or something?

Thats why I put the fleece on the bottom - the duvet kinds of sticks to it and doesn't move - for other horses I have used one of those elasticated surcingles to go over the top and hold it in place, but for Josh it has been sandwhiched between 2 rugs and hasn't moved at all. Obviously he was too busy sweating his a**e off to move anywhere to disturb it

My horses rug used to do this- we believe that it was due to the cold, damp air with his warmness- can't think of another way to put it! But he too was damp on the outside, but not inside- had no signs of sweating and throughout checking him in the night, showing no signs of overheating.
It's condensation..i think thats the term...i can't do science to save my life but i've been told this by someone who actually can

Duvets are really cosy, Id only put a thin rug over the top of one personally. If he's sweating then possibly just use the fleece and Amigo?

Otherwise, the last 2 days have been so cold here (-4 all day today) that my horses have had a layer of frost on top of their turnout rugs!

Very unlikely to be moisture in the air. I would guess he is almost certainly too hot and sweating.
