They did look at issuing Air Marshals with low power ammunition (which won't penetrate an aircraft's fuselage), but there were concerns that it was not sufficiently lethal.
The Israelis found that the only way to deal with suicide bombers (and they told the Met Police, hence what happened to that Brasilian electrician) is to repeatedly shoot the terrorist in the head to cause brain death ASAP. Otherwise they could still detonate their bomb. Problem with that is that the head is a rather small target and shots will probably go right through.
Well as from yesterday Schipol are the 1st airport in the world to use the new "butt naked" scanning system on all passengers. My husband is as I type sitting waiting in Schipol for a KLM flight to the USA that should have left 45 minutes ago! Will be interesting to hear passenger comments. I for one would rather have the humilation of the scanner than let another wacko board a plane with explosives.
I do wonder about our own airport security though. It seems to be tougher to leave the UK than to get in. A while back we flew from the USA to Manchester via Paris CDG. On arrival at Manchester we disembarked, ambled down to passport control with not an immigration official in sight! So everyone off the plane just walked on through to baggage. Admittedly it was not a huge number and late in the evening BUT my husband is American and I assume a number of others on the same flight were not UK citizens.
