I was just wondering if there is an alternative feed to Blue chip original, or if anyone has any ideas of what i could feed my boy to increase condition. I Know there is Baileys topline mix or nuts, but anyone think of anything else. . .im stuck

I used a bag of Outshine last winter. Not sure it would be the most economical feed for achieving weight gain, though. It's considered a 'supplement feed' rather than a 'hard food', as such. It cost me £32 for the 20kg bag but did last absolutely ages as I was just feeding a pint measure per day for added coat shine. For weight gain Bailey's suggest you feed up to 1.3kg per day alongside a conditioning feed, so at the maximum daily amount a 20kg bag of Outshine would last about two weeks.

I'd recommend Bailey's No 4: Top Line Conditioning Cubes. They would go well with the Baileys Outshine, if you decided to supplement with that. They have an excellent reputation. Another I use are Spillers Conditioning Cubes. Burgess Barley rings are also excellent for adding extra conditon too, and are very palatable.

Wanted to add that I definitely felt that the Top Spec balancer allowed me to feed less hard food last winter. Definitely seemed to help improve condition. However, all balancers are fairly expensive. Maybe it would be as well to stop the balancer for a while and put the money towards a good conditoning cube.

Top spec is the best balancer about IMO. Blue chip is a waste of money. Brewers yeast is good for digestion, but hasnt got all the vits and mins in a proper balancer such as topspec!! Baileys Lo cal is good stuff too and cheaper.

There is quite a lot on the market that could be an alternative, it can be quite confusing!

Baileys Outshine is good but exoensive, a good alternative is Triple Crown Triple Top Up which is around £10 a bag cheaper and is remarkably similar. There are also several balancers which would do a similar job including Top Spec which is very good, but again fairly expensive, Baileys LoCal is excellent and an even more cost effective one is Triple Crown Even Keel.

Any one of the above, fed with alfalfa and speedibeet with ad lib good hay/haylage is a superb way of putting weight on and much more effective than feeding a mix.

I fed the Brewers Yeast in addition to a vit/min supplement, as it isn't a full spec. by any means. It is the same principle as adding YeaSacc to an existing diet, only not live and cheaper.

However the fact that it isn't live didn't seem to make any difference to its efficiency

I used Blue Chip and Equilbra - personally I found the equilbra to be more effective - Chancer has really bloomed on it. I also personally swear by Spillars conditioning cubes.

I feed them to Chancer to build him up a bit before his showing champs and it really does work as once off them his condition goes down to being fairly lean again.

I used to use equilibra which was brilliant and not too expensive, but Moose then decided she didn't like it and just left the pellets at the bottom of her bucket at the end of her feed.

Now I swear by NAF pink powder - it seems to do an even better job, and because it's in powder form, she can't separate it from her feed. She looks fantastic on it.

TopSpec all the way. Wouldn't feed anything else now. My two look amazing. OH's horse has the shinest coat ever! Friends horse has matured, and grown over the last year with TopSpec and work.
