This should probably be in vet....but my appaloosa mare suffers badly from flies in the summer, I think because of the sclera round the eye her eyes are more attractive to flies, so she has to wear a fly mask.

Last week they have managed to attack one of her eyes THROUGH the fly mask (think hundreds of flies all over the mask munching away)!!!! I have tackled the eye which was quite gunky but is fine now, but where her eye was weeping slightly they have then attacked the skin underneath the eye and made an area raw (this happened one day between when I checked her in the morning and the evening). Like I said, they have done this through the mask, not by getting underneath, and this has never happened before, normally the mask is effective at protecting her.

The rain has been a godsend as there have been significantly less flies about, and she's had the mask off since monday night, but she still has a patch that is raw. I've been slathering it in orange anti-bacterial cream...can anyone think of a good barrier cream that will deter the flies without irritating the area?

She is drenched in fly repellant twice daily, as is the mask!! To no avail....

well i havn't used it as none of mine are that bothered by flies but my vet does buy and prescribe it

I bought some Power Phaser (I think the brand is 'Leovet' or something like that) from my local tack shop.. it is expensive at £12 for a medium size spray bottle but it works the best out of the shop bought ones I've tried.. and the horseflies at our yard are BIONIC!!!!

I used deosect a couple of years ago when one of the horses at my old yard got lice... if you dilute it further you can use it as a fly-spray and it seemed to work pretty well as I recall.

i use phazer cream and spray i swear by it!

and nobby get weepy and gunky eyes i use teabags, and if that does not work then golden eye from local chemist

xx

.. oh and Phe got manky eyes the other week, think the flies were bothering him and I got 'Brolene' eyedrops from the chemist, his eyes were fine after 2 days using that.

I've never tried the Deosect Fly Repellant however I've heard it's supposed to be very good, as is Coopers Fly Repellant.

Think most of the fly repellants are similar really, and not all of them seem to work that well, I've been using the Nettex Fly repellant this year which is just over £5 a bottle and its been working fairly well. Another one that is good is Espace Gel.

The tea bags have been fab, as I say the eye itself is fine now, its just the patch underneath, they have eaten her!!!

I have used Deosect and dont really rate it too highly

I have had flies land on merlin when the stuff is freshly put on.

If it rains you have to reapply.... if you bath you have to reapply..... if merlin sweats and I wash him down, I need to reapply

I now use Powerfazer.... Leovet and although it repells me, the flies dont mind too much..... better than the others though

Please be careful using Powerfazor, like with other strong fly repellants and the ingrediants used, do a small patch test first, some horses can re-act very badly to this product if they have sensitive skin, so before you start spraying it all them just try a small area and wait 24 hours to make sure they don't look like the have sustained burns.

They have had a quite a few complaints, however they may of changed what they put in the product now, as this was a few years ago not long after it came out.

Sorry rather late reply, have tried coopers and no good. Although I find it does the trick with everything else.

She's a kind of chestnuty grey (she's actually a varnish roan or whatever it is as can't remember), she's appaloosa so has the mottled skin all over and they like her pink bits.
