Hi,

My mare is a Shire X Cob and has just turned 11 and what an eventful 18 months or so it has been

Talk about being thrown in the deep end. Here is her history.

When I first bought her she was footie on the rough gravel at the yard, I had shoes on and she came sound then cue variuos bouts of colic over the next few months, the vet reckons it was stress induced colic as she has only ever been with her previous owner. She was very stressy and bolschy when I first got her so manners were needed to be taught aswell. Change of diet and Brewers yeast added to her feed and she hasnt ( touch wood) suffered with any more colic. Got over that and then I lost my balance in canter, came off and broke my shin bone and ankle so 6 weeks in plaster for me and she was looked after and kept in work by a very good friend at the yard. Then we get me sorted out of plaster, plenty of physio and back on board and get my confidence back only for her to tear her Manica Flexor tendon which resulted in surgery and 7 months of box rest. 1 month of in hand walking which also wasnt the easiest as she preffered to rear, buck and bronc rather than walk lol. Sedalin and a Dually became our new best friend! She has currently been back out in the field since Feb this year and all was going well then she got diagnosed with COPD and Pollen allergies so several more vets visits and bouts of Ventipulmin and tablets for the allergies we now seem to be managing this aswell only for her to tread on a loose stone last night coming in for her tea and ended up almost hoping lame!
I rang my farrier and he told me to keep her in for 24 hours and give her Danilion and keep him updated on how she is and he is almost sure she has bruised her sole and is going to come out when shes a bit better and put front shoes on. I really wanted to try to keep her barefoot but unfortunalty it looks as though she wont be able to be as she has been a little footy for a while now. She was on Farriers Formula but have just changed her to Pro Hoof. I hope it is this and nothing more serious! Only time will tell I suppose. I do need to get her sound enough though to get her back out into the field due to her COPD.

Since her change in diet and manners have been taught she has turned into the most placid, laid back mare its amazing and my farrier was more pleased with her feet the more times he came to do her. (she had really crap feet when I got her)

Shes my world and I love her to bits but cant help feeling a bit down about it all or wondering whats going be the next thing to happen but on the postive me and my mare have got through it all together and our bond is so much stronger and I have learnt so much in the past 18 months its untrue lol.

Sorry pointless post really, am just feeling a bit down about it all.

Thanks Miss L Toe.

I dont think we have got through a month at all yet without having to have a vet out for one thing or another. But hopefully this will be the end now and we can crack on with riding again. We were just getting there aswell, hacking out and schooling. Hopefully this will just be a temperary set back.

Hopefully when she has her front shoes on it will be ok and she will be back to normal
