Hi everyone, I do not even know why I' m writing here...I guess because I need to talk about this nightmare with someone else.
Have you have heard about an aorticiliac thromobosis which causes an aneurysm in horses?
Everything happened all of a sudden 2 week ago. I recieved a call from the owner of my stable saying that my 15 years old thoroughbred gelding was not feeling well. I went immediately to the stable and I called the vet as well. My boy had the signs of a colic but with an anusual trembling of his right hind leg. He was trembling so much and sweating a lot. We tried to let him walk but he did not manage, he was not weight baring on that leg and every one or two steps he looked like in shocked and looked like he wanted to collapse for the pain. The vet did all the exams as looked like a fracture in the beginning but nothing was found (x-rays ecc...). Then we put him in the paddock but he collapsed on the ground from the pain and he layed down with legs spasm for 4 hours...it was the worst moment of my life. I was in complete shock, it was not possibile to bring him to the clinic due to the fact that he did not manage to stand-up. After 5 hourse he stood-up, I went closer to him and I saw that a huge hematoma was growing in between his legs. He was completely in pain despite the medicines. After few hours the hematoma got larger and lager, he was so huge and there was blood coming from it. I did not manage to put him to sleep that night as I hoped that the hemorrage would have stopped. Also the vets (3 vets will participate to this operation due to the complexity of the case) agreed to wait also becasue it was something rare and they did not know how it could have evolved. The following 2 days the hematoma did not enlarge so much (just a bit) but the horse was in pain all the time (less in pain just with medicines) and he did not manage to move neither to eat (he just ate a bit of hay). The day after he was the same in the mornig but after two hourse the hematoma started all of a sudden to enlarge quickly: from the hind legs reached the shoulders thorughout all the abdomen. Vets recommened to put him to sleep in order to avoid him to dye alone in the night due to the internal hemorrage. I decided then to put him to sleep. I stayed with him during the procedure and I' m still in shock for all what happened. The final diagnosis has been: aortiliac thrombosis which caused an aneurysm. Probably it has not been a clear-cut of the artery otherwise he would have died quickly but probably a tear which allowed blood to go out slowly in his body. The vets have never seen anything like that before.... I would like to know if someone else experienced something similar. I feel so bad...I feel guilty for the euthanasia even if I know that there was no way to get out of that situation....these thoughts are devastating me....and I miss him that much....

I am so very sorry that you have lost your horse and in such a horrible and dramatic way. I have no experience of what you describe but it sounds like a horse owners worse nightmare. You tried very hard with your vets to do all that could be done, in no way was his death or what caused it, your fault. One of those awful rare occurrences that just cant be treated and awful for you to have to go through, He is at rest now and not in pain, you made the only decision you could to help end his suffering. Take care of yourself.😢💔

How blummin traumatic for you Im so sorry to hear about the loss of your boy. Don’t dwell on the events leading up to the end, no good can come of it. You did the best you could in the situation, I’m sending a hug.

What an appalling thing to happen, no wonder you are traumatized. Your poor horse and poor you. My sister lost a 7yr old pony after a severe colic which our vet did pull him through only for him to start colicing again two days later and this time he just died while my sister was phoning the vet. PM showed a ruptured aneurysm where the aorta goes into the kidney. Sadly these rare instances happen and nothing we can do about it.
Take care of yourself now and allow time to grieve.

The horse in my avatar died in front of me from massive internal blood loss. He went into hypovolaemic shock after bleeding for over 12 hours and it was awful. You absolutely made the right decision, horrible and heartbreaking that it is. Look after yourself - there was nothing you could have done.
