So I have never owned any kind of horse transport and have always hired a company to move my pony.

My dad has just bought a new boat and wants a vehicle capable of towing it. I pointed out that if he has a big strong pulling machine, I could buy a trailer and he could tow for me :)

So I have a few questions for a complete towing idiot.

1) Can you recommend me a good but cheap to buy towing vehicle? It will only be used for towing and must be cheap to buy (under £1000 if possible) Doesn't have to be pretty but must be good for towing.

2) Can you recommend me a decent but cheap make of trailer? It will be carrying my 13.2 Haflinger, but may also have a 14.2 cob in there. I would guess used no more than once a week and only taken locally.

3) Where do you take a trailer to have the floor and it's general safety checked?

4) I assume the insurance for the towing vehicle covers the towing of the trailer? I appreciate you need a correct license which my dad has.

5) As a complete newbie to all of this, is there anything I need to know with regards to safety etc?

Thank you for all your help. x

Can't answer all of these but:
2) Rear unload trailers are generally cheaper. Sound makes IMO are Bahill, Bateson, Rice, Richardson, Ifor 505.
3) Your local trailer dealer should be able to advise on servicing.
4) usually 3rd party only, but in our experience you need to inform your insurance company.
5) take someone with you who knows about trailers when you go to buy!!

Oh lol I thought you were going to give an idiots guide to towing! Being an idiot who collects her first 4/4 tomorrow was quite interested 😏
Can't help with many of your questions as I currently need to learn myself but can recommend an Ifor 505 ours is brilliant and has never given us any problems what so ever. It will easily carry your ponies and Ifor dealers are fairly common and generally easy parts to get hold of etc etc.
I was recommended a four track as being amazing work cars by several people- might be worth a look
