Is a warmblood a type or is it a specific breed? And how does it vary from say an ISH or such like. Or are they all just slightly different varients on a theme? Hope this makes sense but they are terms that seem to be bandied around alot.
 
I think it's a bit of a contensious issue tbh. A warmblood is the name for a mix of hot blood and cold blood so it's not a breed. But many people refer to warmbloods as breed usually stating the stud book the horse is register with.

A Dutch WB is technically not a breed, it will be TB x with various other breeds (often carriage horses that would originally be cold blood) but it's just to difficult to trace the full breed esp when the horse has arious generation of WB breeding.

You can usually go all the way back to find the original bloodlines. My WB was Bavarian, his dad was register with that stud book and had Hanovian and German WB on his side. His Mother was TB x Cleveland Bay.
 
I agree with PS. Also, IMO a sports horse is a warmblood by another name, it just sounds catchier and is probably easier to market. Some breeders have caught on too, I saw a website recently advertising "Dutch warmblood sports horses" which sounds like slightly clumsy re-branding! I suppose it could be argued that sports horses are a sub-set of warmbloods however warmbloods were bred for competition so that wouldn't entirely make sense.

To me sports horse makes me think more of tb's than wb's, or wbxtb types that aren't full warmbloods. I think bred in this country they're more likely to be a type but on the continent their breeding programmes go back so far that they are more like a breed. Dutch wbs i've known don't have any tb in their pedigree shown in the passport but i think it's down to their breeding and where they've come from really. warmblood is a very general term until you start going further into the bloodlines
 
Sportshorse to me sounds like they don't have pink papers. I know it sounds terrible but from experience alot of 'sportshorses' are either unknown parentage or their parent are unknown parentage. Not sure how they test them to register them (as a Dutch WB could register based on parentage etc) but there are a fair few Irish Sporthorse's floating around that I know for a fact are not registered with any stud book, just TBxID with a fancy name!
