So on Saturday afternoon, I decide for a giggle to participate in a horse whispering session. Said man arrives on yard and 'reads' a couple of horses before us.
Mr Whisperer walks into Ludo's stable behind me and my friend Justine, Ludo looks at us and then stares eyes on stalks, whites of his eyes showing at Mr Whisperer; now this is an reaction I've never seen in my 5+ years of owning Ludo. He wouldn't come near Mr Whisperer
Mr Whisperer : "this one's nervous, frightened of sparrows"
meant in scared of his own shadow sort of way
Me: "no"
This is a horse who is the yard baby-sitter for nervous horses, hates being at the back of ride, prefers to lead and goes first to lead and give confidence to many horse/riders over XC fences.
Mr Whisperer: "This isn't a horse that anyone could walk into the stable and tack up"
Me: "You're very wrong on that one"
Ludo is very friendly and inquisitive and mugs anyone who walks past, just checking them out for sweeties! I've lost count of the number of people who've said to me "my OH/friend/ mother/father/sister/brother/granny* (delete as appropriate) is really scared of horses, won't come near mine but loves talking and cuddling Ludo. Kids, vets, farriers, dentists walk in and out of his stable and he's never reacted the way he did to Mr Whisperer
After a few minutes Ludo decides Mr Whisperer is OK and does let him touch him.
Mr Whisperer : "You've owned this horse for 5 years"
Me: "Yes"
Blimey he's got something right I think to myself , then I remembered the last time he'd been on the yard he 'read' for Ludo's next-stable neighbour and I have my Milton Keynes 3DE placks (sp) on the stable door which are for 2004 and 2005 -I had deliberately left the door open so Mr Whisperer couldn't read just forgotten he'd been on the yard before.
Mr Whisperer : "He's really nervous, but it goes back to before you owned him"
I refer to you, Dear Readers back to earlier comment about nerves - I shrug, what can I say I didn't own him before I owned him!
Mr Whisperer : "When he jumps, he always takes off too soon"
Me: "Nope, he often chips in a short one"
Mr Whisperer : "I wouldn't trust him over a solid fence."
Ludo loves XC, as soon as his feet hits soft ground, tanks off locking onto fences
A short pause then with head bowed "I keep seeing a film"
Me: Oh?
Mr Whisperer : "Yes, the one with the really clever man in it, but he doesn't know he's clever"
Yard Friend (who's standing outside the stable): Rainman?
Mr Whisperer : "Yes! That's the one - this horse is slightly Autistic"
Me: (without missing a beat of which I'm particularly proud) "Yeah, but he's rubbish at drawing" Cue lots of laughter from small crowd gathered outside Ludo's Stable "And if he could gamble like Dustin Hoffman in the film, we're off to Las Vegas!!"
Mr Whisperer : (sort of laughs, but don't think he appreciates my great wit!) "He has to be asked to do things clearly, in a certain way"
Show me a horse that doesn't need to be asked clearly!
Mr Whisperer: "This horse was beaten when he was being taught to jump - in fact he wasn't taught properly"
This does cause Justine and I to exchange a glance - I know that Ludo was ridden as a 6/7 year old by a local SJ who has a reputation for 'forceful negotiation' shall we say?
Mr Whisperer: "Why don't you do more dressage?"
Me: "It's a means to an end for me"
By which I mean that for eventing you've gotta do the dressage!
Mr Whisperer: "You should do more, what I mean by his autism is that he wants to do it properly and gets upset when it's not. You could be in the ribbons with this horse"
Me: mmmh
[No poop Sherlock, you've looking at a Dutch Warmblood! To be honest we're no danger to Carl Hester but we're not terrible and have been known to be 'in the ribbons' before now
Mr Whisperer: " This horse understands you, but you don't understand him"
Me: mmmh
[If he understands me so well, why the hell doesn't he just get on and do the dressage properly himself????]
Mr Whisperer: "This horse has been hunted by someone who was rich and stylish"
Me: "I have the style but don't have the cash" (lots of laughter again!). "I don't know, I've never hunted him, but I think he has been hunted"
Mr Whisperer: "I could have a great day's hunting with this one"
oh yeah? 10 minutes ago you said you wouldn't trust him over a solid fence I thinks to myself
At this point Dear Readers, I shall leave the story just to say that Mr Whisperer went on a lot about small stuff that supposedly happened before I owned Ludo so I couldn't corroborate any of it and all of it pretty generic and possibly just good guessing. He went on about an injury in his nearside back fetlock - I know nothing of that - but he mentioned nothing about the front leg where Ludo had had an arthoscopy and 4 months box rest! Oh and although Ludo is actually 15, he believe's he's 8.
Moral of the story - probably not the most sensible £20 I've ever spent, but I've had my monies worth of giggles about having an autistic horse! I'm thinking of changing his show name to Dustin Horseman and his stable name to Toostie!
If anyone wants the contact details, including website, for this horse whispering genius, please PM me!!
Lots of Christmas cheer, mulled wine and cake for reading all of this!
