Someone I know has a one year old cocker spaniel bitch (spayed) which is tan and black and KC registered. The couple work (he works shifts) so the dog is on her own quite a lot and because of this chews things that she finds lying around, including table legs

Because of this, they have been putting her in a cage while she is on her own which has been solving the chewing problem, however she has not been getting enough exercise or entertainment while they are at home and has turned into quite an unhappy dog.

Last week, the male owner was putting the dog back into its cage after he found it chewing something else (he had been on nights and trying to sleep) and the dog turned around and bit his finger quite hard. The couple are now concerned because they have an 8 year old little boy, and a baby on the way.

I cannot take the dog in because we already have an English Pointer and a Siamese. I do not want to introduce another dog into our house because our cat has had stress issues causing her to pluck out her fur which we have just sorted out and I do not want to cause her any more stress as do not know how this dog reacts to cats. Plus, our cat was here first and I really do not want to go back to her plucking herself, it simply would not be fair.

So, I have said to the owners that I will ask around to see whether anyone knows of someone/somewhere that takes in dogs like this. I think with regular exercise and not being left on her own as much she could be a very nice dog. She is incredibly loving and affectionate, and it very pretty too!

Definitely get her into breed rescue. They do a fantastic job at matching potential owners with dogs, and there will often be people lining up with prior breed experience.

The poor love. Sounds like the sooner the better for all concerned.

Poor little thing! I'm trying not to overreact here but this does make me a quite mad! Why on earth do people get dogs, and pay good money for them in this case, when they have no flipping idea how to care for them? Oh well, I hope it's not too late to turn her back into a happy dog. Well done for trying to help. I'd try a breed rescue before anything else

Thank you so much to everyone... It is quite difficult because it actually a member of my husband's family, so although I feel like wringing their necks for what has happened, I am also trying to stay quite neutral nd just find a solution for the poor dog.

Like I said in the opening post, I would have taken her in but I just cannot put my little Inca through it... she'd be bald! Plus, I don't know how the dog would react to being with my Pointer and the cat.

I get frustrated because people buy these working dogs (which is what breeds like this are intended for, as are the Pointers) and are not willing to put in the work with them. My husband and I do not use our pointer for anything, but make sure she has at least one hour of walking through fields off the lead and running around like a loon! This keeps her happy, and she so loves being out!

You're so right and what a difficult position you are in. I hope somewhere can be found as being kept in these conditions will certainly lead to it biting again. If I lived closer I would foster it until a home could be found. Can anyone you know locally who understands the breed do that?

I don't really know anyone around here with that breed... I know everyone around the area who breeds pointers though so could ask them I suppose.

I agree that it needs to be sorted asap, as it is going to lead to more biting and a very unhappy dog.

I really need to get something sorted, because otherwise this dog is going to end up coming to me and like I explained before, it is not really a suitable option because of my little Siamese.

Thanks... just got them!

I will pass them on to the dog's owner and let you know what happens. Hopefully, she will find a nice home where she is happy. The NESSR have also contacted me, so hopefully we are well on our way to sorting something out now.
