Hi all
For those of you that would like to know i thought i would post a little update.
Thanks so much for the HHO vibes yesterday. She travelled pretty well and was such a good girl for the vet.

Unfortunately its bad news though.
Vet did nerve blocks and x-rays.
Its not ringbone as suspected but its the laminitis, its chronic and looked horrid on the x-ray.
I got rather tearful at the clinic seeing her poor foot.
Vet said we will be lucky to get her sound again

To say i am gutted is an understatement

My beautiful girl may never be sound again, we are going to give it a damn good try though.

Farrier came out tonight and fitted open heart bars to take pressure off the toe, i also have 20 days bute to start, and then see.
There is a slim chance we can get her sound, so more of those vibes would be great, although i am not holding my breath as vet did say chances were slim. And he is one of the best vets there is.

Anyway, i spoke to the farrier about possibly putting her in foal as a friend had suggested it given the news i may never ride her again.
So i am tentatively considering it, will discuss with the vet also.
She has had 6 foals previously, all beautiful with stunning temperaments too.
So this may happen, it would be so nice to have a foal from her, as she is my perfect horse, beautiful with a wonderful temperament to boot. But i will not want to risk it if it would be too much for her, we shall see.

Oh so so sorry it wasn't the news you wanted. Was thinking of you today and had kept everything crossed for you. Hopefully your plan will come to fruition and something good will come out of all this.
 
sorry to hear about your horse and I hope you can get her feeling better soon. However I personally wouldn't put my mare in foal if she had laminitis as surely it would only make matter worse, especially near the end of her term and also the process of foaling can actually cause laminitis in some cases. Anyway good luck with her.
 
Thanks mattilda, really appreciate that, i hope so too.
We tried to breed last year but it didnt work, but she was turned out with the stallion for the whole time, which caused the trouble.
But maybe we could breed her in hand or do AI, will see what the vet thinks, dont want her to struggle, but i would be made up to get a foal i can keep for my next ridden horse from her.
Will keep you all posted if that works out ok x

Hiys, thanks for your reply.
I know what you mean, this is what i said to the farrier as i knew laminitis could come on after pregnancy/foaling, so i am going to have to really think carefully about all of this. I wont be jumping in, but it is something that has crossed my mind

i know the chances are slim, but she may come right again, and if she doesnt, putting her in foal could be a good option.
i had a pony that had horrendous laminitus, so bad we were looking at her being PTS, she then did a tendon in the feild

the vet said shed never get better, we had to give her bute before riding her and competing her, but in the end she didnt need it, she fully recovered to give me a couple of years of enjoyement before she had a hemrage

so it can come right, and i know you shouldnt get your hopes up, but i wouldnt completely wipe it out of your mind....

Thanks so much perdy for sharing your story, that does give me some hope, she is made of tough stuff my mare, she really is, i would love to be able to plod on her again, she is such a pleasure to ride and own x

If you haven't already done so contact the Laminitis Clinic - they were so helpful with me last year when my mare was bad. Between them and my farrier they helped get my mare sound again (she is back in work) - it is their specialist subject. They have a website and also their helpline is open between 10 - 4 everyday (costs £1 a min - but for me worth every penny) and they will also speak to your farrier, look at xrays etc.

No advice I'm afraid but fingers crossed for you and her that she comes sound. It's heartbreaking and obviously a shock to you. Hopefully in a few days thing will look a little less bleak (((HUGS)))
 
just to boost your thoughts the stud where i have just brought my youngster from (very good stud have been asked to exhibit and stallion parade at Badminton HT) had a mare who kept getting laminitis every time she cme in season and so they put ther in foal and she was fine. by putting her in foal it stopped the laminitis
 
Don't give up yet. Flesh eating pony from hell had laminitis and I am delighted to say made a full recovery with careful feeding and weightwatching to the point where he can once again outrun me when seeking a nibble

There's the Laminitis Trust to get in touch with: I've heard good things about them. Stay off all sugar items! Our Little Lad had a bad bout last year after eating carrots! Admittedly it was about seven a day (it's amazing how they add up

)). Now he doesn't even get so much as a Polo.

I know of a cob that was nearly pts 3 times with lami hes out hacking and schooling and tiny bit of juming on soft ground.Good luck with managment its not all doom and gloom.

. There is hope though, and many do recover. My little lass had a dreadful laminitis episode back in 2004. So bad, that there really sounded like there was no hope for her. When we arrived back in the UK to see her, I honestly thought that was it. Vet was booked to come and put her down, but at the last minute, there was a glimmer and a slight sparkle in her eye and I called it off. Vet was in agreement that we would give her a shot at getting better even though she had rotation and was pretty much crippled. Well the short story is, she survived (returned to normal very quickly actually) and she now lives her days out over here in Canada with us

. Interestingly, in the 12 years I've owned her, the only time she ever got laminitis was when we were not there, and since flying her out here, not a whisper of it

Thanks so much everyone, i am going to call the vet today to chat to him about it all again and possibly breeding her as it was all a bit of a blur yesterday really.
I hope she will be ok, it would make my day, year etc if she comes sound again, she is such a superb horse on the whole.
The x-ray just looked so horrid.

I had a similar situation too tia in regards to when seren had laminitis, the first time she got a small bout was when i was 18 and slipped a disc, thus was away and couldnt ride etc, the second time, not that i was told was when she was on loan to a BHS Approved riding school who neglected her feet beyond belief, whilst jumping her round cross country courses, all the time her foot was not supported, overgrown and must have only had shoe changes every 10weeks or more, makes me so cross when i think about it.

We have been battling the last three years to get the feet right and they have come on so well on the outside, just the internal that we cannot fight, but hopefully we can manage.
But i just have to deal with now really, cant change it now, so thanks again, i really hope she could be sound again for her general comfort and just a little walk of a weekend.
Though bless her soul, she just does not seemed phased, she is not making a fuss, such a happy disposition that she seems happy enough even if badly pottery on the front foot in question.

Can't offer more advice, but hope she comes right for you. I would not put her in foal though. If her feet are as bad as you say, it could cause a lot of discomfort from the extra weight. Fingers crossed for her.
 
Thanks fran, i am going to speak to the vet about it only if we can get her comfortable,sound would i consider it. I really dont know just now,vet is one of the best in the country and gives honest answers so we shall see, thanks though i do appreciate your thoughts on the matter and i will be considering her well being, that does come first, i think the vet will say best not but i would like to pose the question
