As I'm completely and utterly bored this afternoon I thought I would do a little update on my new horse incase anyone is interested!

You may recall, I had him castrated when I bought him and he then developed a scirrhous cord and peritonitis and went under GA to have it removed once the peritonitis was under control.
That has all healed really well and has not caused any further problems.

However! He then got an infected injection site in his gluteal muscle (an injection he was given before we realised how high a white blood cell count he had etc etc). So once the abscess was well formed he went to the vets and had it lanced and cut open. Luckily most of the muscle tissue has recovered really well and he hasn't had to have further surgery on it. He should be coming home from the vets on Friday after two weeks of being in and hopefully all being well he will start light work in about a month.

When he is home he will be having physio, massage and regular use of the solarium and a laser machine to try and reduce scar tissue. Luckily he is still young and although he has been through such a lot he is healing remarkably well.

I have had him for 11 weeks to the day and so far we have managed 8 vets visits and 3 weeks at the vets! Bless him he is such a good patient though and we have built up a really good bond.

I do have some rather gory photo's but I am unsure whether to put them on here as they have turned stomachs!

ETA: As H_J asked for them, here are the pic's...

And a week later and well on it's way to healing

I do feel for you but if it is any comfort we had the same problem with Rafi when he was castrated and for the next couple of years he easily got infection in any wound.
It was all worth it though as he is such a great horse, I think they know how much you love them!

Thanks for that The_Carthorse. Interesting to hear Rafi also had this as no one I know has ever come across it before. I'm going to wrap him in cotton wool for a while

So glad he is feeling better now! What a nightmare for you and poor little man! That infected area is quite unbelievable. Hopefully he will forget all about it now and you can start enjoying him.

Rafi never had a neck abscess though and that looks very nasty and must smell awful . A friends horse had one after a flu and tet and was left with a lump but didn't affect her. I am sure he will pay your back in time

Yes sorry, I meant the scirrhous cord.

This was on his hindquarters. And luckily it didn't smell too much! I thought it would be a lot worse than it was!!

that.was.disgusting..... I read thread before you posted pics and came back as I was curious...ewwwww! Good job I'm not eating...!

Hope he gets better soon

Oh lordy - I would put a warning in the title to be honest. Those pics are quite something.

Poor you and poor horsie even more. Can understand what you are saying about the bond you have built up with him though. Fingers crossed you can kick on with him now and do normal stuff.

Ifield - Poor boy, that looks nasty! Fingers crossed he has had his share of Vet's visits for now!

Ewww - totally disgusting but very interesting (I have a raspberry swirl cheesecake in the fridge that I probably won't now be eating for pudding!

I know a horse that had a much worse abcess than that on the quarters and it's healed perfectly.

Here's hoping your chap has finished his stint with the Vet for a good while now!!

Ouch, impressive pics. Better out than in as they say. My horse has an abscess on his shoulder last winter of unknown cause. It was lanced in much the same way & healed brilliantly, quite fun keeping it open so it heals from the inside out but honestly he recovered so fast & hasnt even left a scar.

Really hoping your lad puts his troubles behind him & you are in action very soon.
