My girl groom, Sam, has been at the vet's all afternoon with her little JR, Pickle - who was taken critically ill this morning. It appears Pickle found a dollop of Equest spat out by one of the mares we wormed yesterday. Why on EARTH she would voluntarily eat something that tastes SO vile, who knows!!
We all know (I hope) of the dangers of Ivermectin to most breeds of dog - particularly Collies - but it seems Equest (or wormers containing Moxidectin) is even more dangerous than the straight Ivermectin wormers because it is absorbed so quickly. The initial symptoms - at least in Pickle's case(and according to the vet these are classic symptoms) - were shaking and shivering and trying to vomit. By the time she reached the vet, the 'nervous' symptoms were SO bad that it made her treatment extremely difficult as she had become highly agitated and aggressive (and Pickle is the LEAST aggressive JR I have ever met!!)
I've just had a call from the vet who says she is on the mend - although still on a drip and being closely monitored. So a lucky escape - please be VERY careful with all wormers - but particularly Equest - if you have dogs. The quantity this little dog could have found was VERY small - but it was enough to nearly kill her.
