Prob should be in veterinary but figured more people use this...

I'm wondering whether anaemia explains Flash's 'so laid back he's almost horizontal' attitude to life. I've said to several different vets about his lack of enthusiasm and none of them have suggested blood tests or looked at his gums, but I think I might ask for one when he has his vacc in a few weeks. To me he does look a little pale, but I'm not sure if that's just a different species thing. I do have him on pro-cell and that does seem to make a slight difference, but he's still far from forward, you really have to get after him to get anything out of him at all. Are there any other tell tale signs I could check for? Approx how much are the blood tests? treatment?

Thanks in advance!

I had a blood test done on my old horse for another reason and they came back and said he was anaemic. They gave me some stuff called Visorbin, but to be honest it made him a bit loopy!

Sorry that's probably not much help to you. I know that the vets fee was about £80 - that was for callout, examination and lab fees.

I have mine on Kossolian (not sure what the similarities are between that and pro-cell though but it did work for mine. Certainly mine has always been a lot better on Kossolian though and we did have him blood tested many years ago now as he seemed lethargic and used to seem to blow a lot if doing anything strenuous. They did find he was slightly anaemic so we've had him on supplement ever since and he's fine now.

I don't think the blood test itself is that expensive really it'll be the call out etc that'll add it up. Is your vet not due to visit for any vaccinations or anything in the near future? If so then ask that he take a blood sample then to lessen the cost.

Think we used to have mine on red cell? Or something like that, some liquid anyway but it didn't really do anything. Think that was for him anyway, can't remember was sooo long ago!

Pickle is prone to anemia so has regular blood tests. The gum test is obvious and its easiest if you get another horse to compare directly. The laziness is usually quite extreme with pickle like he actually closes his eyes briefly when on a free walk! Also sudden weight loss! I have to weigh tape pickle weekly

Blood tests are normally around £50 and its definetly worth it, as if he is very anemic you have to go on specific drugs but normally they give you equisup, you could try him on that, it sends some horses a bit loopy but it usually does the trick.

My old pony was on Visorbin for anaemia. It didnt make him any loopy, he was pretty forward going anyway though so I might not have noticed. I had vet out for blood tests, examination etc, think it cost about £90. Talking over 2 years ago now though
He was so so so lethargic, even though normally he enjoyed his work, and kept losing weight. As soon as he had been on the visorbin for a few weeks he perked up and started retaining his weight.

we don't have any weight loss issues, he's always maintained a nice weight, but he does eat a hell of a lot!! He really is abnormally lazy, he should be very fit with the amount of work he does. I'll prod his gums tonight. A pony is going for a height cert so flash was going with him for vacc and I'll try to add on bloods. I can't imagine him loopy, things that would normally send a horse loopy like the amount of oats he gets and high winds just make him very slightly less asleep!

Well pickle is normally asleep but when on box rest for a day combined with equisup I lost him on the lunge. He is also filled up with oats and is normally asleep!
