My 17hh 23yr old TB has been extremely lethargic when being ridden so my vet blood tested him & said that he had a low red & white blood cell count ofl 4.? when it should be 6.?.

He reckons it's probably the result of him having had a virus (didn't show any symptoms, but he is stabled next to my other horse who had a virus in Dec 06 & had discharging nose & cough etc) & recommended 4-6 weeks rest.

Anyone else had a horse with this ? What was the outcome & is there anything else I can do to help him??

My old cob was prone to anemia, I was advised to give him Propell/Redcell to help sort out his bloodcounts - any time he got a bit lethargic I'd pop him on it for 4 weeks and it always sorted him out.

His was due to worm damage in his gut which gave him no end or problems.

Very common, we have had 2 horses whos blood counts have gone like this within the last couple of months:
Week 1 - clean
Week 2 - virus
Week 3 - over virus but are anaemic (immediately put on Zynolix).
Week 4 - clean.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I will maybe try the Red cell stuff.

Vicijp - what is Zynolix ? Can you buy it over the counter so to speak or is vet only ?
