I think my springer may have a problem as over the last few days he has been biting his bum lots and to put it mildly he stinks...bless!
Does anybody elses pooch have this problem and is it a trip to the vets or something I can tackle myself???

You will have to go to the vets Im afraid........Its pretty hard to empty anal glands to start with.....if your not familiar with the method......but there is also a chance they could be infected.......if so by doing it yourself u could make it worse....esp if not fully emptied......may also need antibiotics.

my year old springer had an infection in his at the begining of the year. vet gave him antibiotic injection to clear it. was fine after. since then had an episode a couple of weeks ago where he was intrested in his backside again, worried it was another infection, got him straight down to the vet who emptied his glands to find nothing, so that was good. on the wasy out the vet said next time he would show me how to do it myself!!

oh dear. but as cala said, would rather take him to the vet as he knows what he's looking for and would spot another infection if it was there. hope he's ok.

You can take them to the vets and sometimes grooming palours do it for you....the only problem is, if he does have an infection you would need antibotics...think spaniels are quite prone to it as my cocker gets it too...
the anal glands can get infected quite easily due to them being near to the ground at times and blockage is common.
good luck -

I did work experience at a vets a few years ago, watched an operation on one little dog who had them removed as she kept getting them blocked and infected, apparently they have no real use anyway, other than scent marking, maybe removing them is a serious option if its a reucurrent problem?

My terrier had problems with his anal glands all of his life on and off, yet I had his sister same breed and age and never had a problem with her. The vet will show you how to do it yourself if is reacurres reguarly otherwise it will cost you everytime you have to go.
