quite a lot of you may have replied to my thread about the issues of affording children and horses! well for now my fiance and I have decided to enjoy life and our hobbies..... he has got 2 new bikes this year.... I have got 2 new ponies! 4 year old new forest ponies- one gifted to me and one on loan (previous owner had them in field next to mine but does not have time for them due to 2 horses at other yard, one of whom is badly injured) I cant remember how to do pictures on here! I own Amber, who is about 14'1, but bum high and loan 13'2 gelding socks.

So far they have been getting to know my horses and getting used to daily handling, coming in for the day, as before they had been handled but then out in a herd for nearly a year without daily handling. I actually met them before as 6 month olds off the forest before they were moved to another yard. they have both got used to being taken out for sort walks in hand on there own.

But yesterday for the first time they were introduced to a caveson and lunge line :) no pictures in action as you can imagine i was quite busy! they are a bit chalk and cheese- socks is more sensitive and tends to stop if unsure, where as amber is more forward- if in doubt trot! and less sensitive to comands. Practiced backing up and socks moves back with tiny encouragement, where as amber is oblivious and has to be shoved to go back!

they both have a long way to go and as I have 2 other horses as well and sadly not all the time in the world, I will focus on Amber for now. but I do work only part time for 6 weeks over the summer :)

Anyone else backing theirs this summer?

Good luck with your ponies, they sound like fun. My summer project is a (previously) very spoilt and bolshy standard shetland, he's now backed but currently lacking a saddle and driven half a dozen times and seems to love it. Still issues with manners but given a job he's a different pony.

its amazing what a bit of work can do isn't it! the gelding socks has been a bit aloof with me, but after working with him yesterday, trying to teach him to lunge, he is pally with me this morning and wants attention!

I am sure there will be plenty of ups and downs but looking forward to the challenges!
